GoPro Hero 9 BlackHIGHLIGHTSGoPro users surged forward post the coronavirus crunch.GoPro YouTube channel hits ten million subscribers.GoPro uploaded its first YouTube video in September, 2009.The camera market share in 2020 was hampered by an outbreak of coronavirus. Some camera companies surpassed their expected sales projection, Canon with its EOS R5 and R6 models for instance, others made efforts to sustain their business such as GoPro.The US-based GoPro company is known for producing top-quality action cameras. The GoPro cameras are meant for shooting travel and adventure videos. This is why the company was lulled during COVID-19. In April, 2020, GoPro announced a $100 million reduction in operating expenses including a workforce reduction of more than 20 per cent (over 200 employees). The company's founder and CEO, Nicholas Woodman, said, "GoPro's global distribution network has been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, driving us to transition into a more efficient and profitable direct-to-consumer-centric business over the course of the year."There were assumptions that the company will not release a new GoPro camera in 2020. But that didn't happen.…

Twitter wants your help fighting falsehoods. It's risky, but it just might work

Twitter has spent years and millions of dollars fighting falsehoods with a now well-worn arsenal—fact-checks and warning labels and context labels and algorithmic tweaks and bans and bans on the President of the United States—but this week the company unveiled a totally new weapon: us. Select Twitter users who participate in the new program, called Birdwatch, can identify tweets they believe are misleading, write notes that provide context to the tweet, and rate the quality of other participants’ notes, the company says. The eventual goal is to add community-written notes directly beneath Tweets, through what Twitter calls “consensus from a broad and diverse set of contributors.” (The pilot starts with 1,000 qualified users; you can apply here.) It’s actually an old idea, harnessing the wisdom of the crowd that powers Wikipedia and a range of decades-old digital forums. But Twitter is not Wikipedia, and within minutes of the debut of Birdwatch many people, well, took to Twitter. “Unlike Wikipedia, Twitter is not one cohesive community, and users are not dedicated to a common purpose of sharing knowledge,” contended Tiffany C. Li, a professor at Boston University School of Law. “Imagine the harassment and disinfo you already see in replies and…

Video software platform Vimeo valued at nearly $6 billion in a new round of fundraising

In December, Vimeo saw its highest month of year-over-year revenue growth—57 percent—for all of 2020. Vimeo on 25 January announced in an official release that it raised $300 million in primary equity from funds and accounts advised by T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc. and Oberndorf Enterprises, LLC at a valuation in excess of $5 billion. This follows the November 2020 announcement of the company’s $150 million equity raise and IAC’s plan to spin-off Vimeo into an independent, separately-traded public company. The new investment occurred in two tranches, consisting of $200 million at a $5.2 billion pre-money valuation and $100 million at a $5.7 billion pre-money valuation. The capital will provide Vimeo with additional cash to accelerate its investments in growth, innovation and talent. Subject to necessary stockholder approvals and the final approval of the IAC board of directors, IAC expects to complete the spin-off of Vimeo to IAC shareholders early in the second quarter of 2021. “As the world embraces video like never before, Vimeo is in an incredibly strong position to help more businesses take advantage of this powerful medium,” said Anjali Sud, CEO, Vimeo. “We have built an industry-leading solution that the market needs, and we intend to…

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Twitter's Trump Ban

The social network is better than ever. Why not block all heads of state?Jan. 28, 2021, 5:00 a.m. ETCredit...Jordan AwanOfficially, Donald Trump left office only last week, but in truth the frenetic, ALL-CAPS soul of the Trump presidency took flight weeks before, when @realdonaldtrump, the president’s Twitter feed and the purest expression of his id, finally met an unceremonious end under Jack Dorsey’s long-reluctant banhammer. For the better part of five years, Trump’s Twitter was an instrument of power as frightening as it was bizarre: the federal government’s most consequential public-address system that also happened to be a grumpy old man’s favorite method for yelling at his TV. Trump used Twitter to hire and fire, negotiate war and peace, get out the vote, conjure conspiracies and finally to incite an insurrection, but mostly he used it to mint his favorite currency — attention — by goading and trolling the global media into talking only and ever about him.I had long been ambivalent about banning Trump’s tweets; as the president, Trump enjoyed near-infinite access to media, so shutting down this single channel didn’t seem worth the trouble. But weeks into Trump’s absence from Twitter, I have come around to the wisdom of banishment. I…

New film examines secrets of Amazonian aquatics trade

A new film exploring the artisanal fishing trade for the home aquarium industry in Brazil has been released on Vimeo. Wild Caught: The Aquarium Fish Trade of the Amazon is the first full-length documentary to investigate the trade of tropical fish, the benefits it offers to rainforest conservation and the reasons why the industry in Brazil has been in decline. The film, by Don McConnell, examines the aquarium fishery trade in the Rio Negro region of Brazil. This wild capture fishery has existed for more than 60 years in the state of Amazonas and has demonstrated it can play an important role in the protection of one the Earth’s most important forest and aquatic ecosystems without depleting the populations of the fish. However, over the last 20 years, the industry has been in crisis and has faced numerous challenges. These challenges include the captive breeding of Amazon fish species internationally, concerns about fish mortality, pressure from animal rights groups, increased bureaucratic hurdles and bio-piracy. Each of these issues is examined in depth in this 90-minute film, which features interviews with the world’s leading scientists, researchers, exporters and importers as well as talking to the fishers themselves who describe their life…

EXPLAINER-Google, Facebook battle Australia over proposed revenue-sharing law

By Jonathan Barrett and Byron KayeSYDNEY, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Alphabet Inc's Google has vowed to withdraw its main search engine from Australia, while Facebook Inc says it will block news sharing if the government proceeds with a law to make them pay domestic media outlets for content they feature. The dispute is being closely watched worldwide since it would be the biggest challenge yet to how the U.S. tech companies that dominate social media and search engines use news on their websites.WHAT DOES THE LEGISLATION SAY?* The planned law states that Australian news outlets can negotiate individually or collectively with Facebook and Google over payment for content used on the tech firms' sites. Other tech firms may be added if they are deemed big enough.* If the parties cannot reach an agreement, an arbitrator will decide whose offer is more reasonable. If Facebook or Google break any resulting agreements, they can be fined up to A$10 million ($7.4 million) in civil penalties.* The law also requires tech firms give media outlets notice when they change search algorithms in a way affecting the order in which content appears. They must also share their use of consumer data extracted from news content…
