The National Police have warned of a WhatsApp scam in which criminals gain access to genuine accounts and impersonate their owners to ask friends and ... family for money. The fraudsters contact people in the account holder's circle and claim they urgently need financial help. Typical excuses include having to buy a new mobile phone after losing or breaking their previous one, or needing to pay for a delivery due on collection. How do they gain access? The cybercriminals exploit a vulnerability in the iOS operating system, specifically versions earlier than 16.7.12. This means older iPhones running outdated versions of iOS are particularly vulnerable. After sending the fraudulent messages, the attackers use the "delete for me" option from a linked device. This prevents the account holder from seeing the messages being sent, while they remain visible on the screens of their contacts. The aim is to gain the trust of friends or relatives so they will transfer money or send funds to the criminal, believing they're helping someone they know. Thieves return stolen item to Fed Hill business after viral social media video Angeli's Pizzeria posted on social media giving the people responsible for taking their computer system 72 hours to return it BALTIMORE — With the help of social media, a stolen item has been returned to a well-known pizzeria in Federal Hill. "I guess they love our pizza, and they wanted to order whenever they wanted, so they got the computer," said Juniet Ozturk, owner of Angeli's Pizzeria. CANTON, New York (WWNY) - An Ogdensburg man has admitted that he was using Snapchat when he drove through a stop sign, killing two people in 2024. Connor Graveline was in St. Lawrence County Court on Wednesday to take a plea deal. He pleaded guilty to two counts of criminally negligent homicide, failing to stop at a stop sign, and using an electronic device while driving. In return, he will be sentenced to one year in jail. Graveline was 19 years old when, in December 2024, he drove a pickup truck through a stop sign at the intersection of State Highway 310 and County Route 34 in the town of Potsdam. The truck struck an SUV, killing Real Coupal, 84, and Loretta Perez, 73, both of Massena. Graveline was originally charged with two counts of criminally negligent homicide. According to a criminal complaint, he was using a “non-hands-free electronic device,” driving “in excess of 60 miles per hour,” and failed to stop at a stop sign. Graveline’s lawyer later claimed that his client was alleged to have used a diabetes monitoring device at the time of the collision. Facebook’s attorney said the social media company investigated suspicious third-party apps following the breach and told jurors the state’s evidence is outdated because safeguards have improved. Opening statements began in Santa Fe on Wednesday morning, just weeks after 48 U.S. states reached a landmark settlement with Meta, which addressed child safety concerns and privacy issues surrounding the same data breach. So far, New Mexico is the only state that has pushed the case toward trial, expected to last four weeks, as part of its go-it-alone approach to prosecuting Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram. In court documents, the state argues Facebook failed to alert or protect users from a personality quiz on the social platform that harvested data from roughly 87 million Facebook profiles and sold it to a political consulting firm, Cambridge Analytica.
