Barry Jenkins Is Dropping Underground Railroad Hints

Barry Jenkins acolytes will know that his adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel The Underground Railroad has been highly anticipated since before La La Land was mistakenly named the Best Picture at the 2017 Oscars, making his slow trickle of teasers all the more thrilling. The short teasers give us a glimpse at newcomer Thuso Mbedu as Cora, a runaway who uses the Underground Railroad — depicted as a literal underground train system with tracks, conductors, engineers, and tunnels — to search for freedom after escaping her Georgia plantation. Writer and showrunner Jenkins also directed every episode of the Amazon Prime Video limited series. The cast includes Aaron Pierre, Joel Edgerton, and William Jackson Harper. Catch up on the Underground Railroad teasers from Vimeo-er Barry Jenkins below. Jenkins started tweeting clips from the upcoming series on October 19, 2020, beginning with “Preamble,” a slow gaze across a crowd of Black people in a train station, staring right back. “Who built all this?” a voice says over composer Nicholas Britell’s soul-gripping score. “Well, who builds anything in this country?” another voice replies. Here the camera curiously follows our heroine, Cora Randall, as she walks through the train station. “Free or…

Marianna man sentenced to 10 years federal prison for child pornography

MARIANNA, Fla. (WTXL) — A Marianna man has pleaded guilty to federal charges involving child pornography depicting children younger than five-years-old.Lawrence Keefe, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, announced Monday that 21-year-old Logan Rosborough pled guilty to a federal charge of receiving, possessing, and distributing child pornography. In July 2018, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received information that Rosborough, 21, had uploaded 49 images containing child pornography via Tumblr, a micro-blogging and social networking website.Further investigation by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) identified over 1,500 images and videos of child pornographic material through searches of Rosborough’s cellular telephone, social media, and electronic storage accounts. The majority of the female children in the 49 pornographic images appeared to be younger than 5 years old, and none of them appeared to be older than 12.“Receiving, possessing and distributing pornographic images and videos of children are crimes that leave victims with significant, long-lasting trauma and a loss of innocence that cannot be recovered,” U.S. Attorney Keefe said. “This behavior is simply intolerable, and in the Northern District of Florida we will continue to use every tool at our disposal to pursue, prosecute, and punish those who engage in these practices.” Rosborough was charged…

Facebook, Twitter and 'Almighty God'

How should we respond to Facebook and Twitter banning political speakers who knowingly repeat factual falsehoods?I have some experience with deciding what to publish, but no good ideas about what to do with these two Internet age companies. For a half-century at newspapers, my job included deciding whether to print stories or letters that contained ... “hogwash.”But I am still puzzling about Facebook and Twitter. They do not fit within traditional laws and limits. As an editor, I allowed some upsetting stuff to be published, following the hoary cliché that newspapers should “Comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.”I disallowed some stuff, too. When a Ku Klux Klan member yammered from near Punxsutawney, we published a news story about his demonstration in DuBois. We did not print direct quotations, photos of hooded Klansmen or of crosses. We told readers what happened. We drew the line at what might promote his vile, racist bigotry.I also got into a hassle about an obituary. The deceased had three surviving brothers. His obituary named two. His widow said he insisted in not naming the third brother because of a feud. That brother was a subscriber to our newspaper. We decided that either the obituary would name…

Greenfield project announcements, an indication of future FDI trends, fell 63% to $28 billion, from $77 billion in 2019. The pandemic’s negative impact on FDI was amplified by low prices of and low demand for commodities.”Nigeria has failed to push the needle on FDI investments in the last decade attracting more portfolio inflows compared to direct investment which is viewed as more stable and required to…

covid-19-warnings-were-on-twitter-well-before-the-outbreak-of-the-pandemic

COVID-19 warnings were on Twitter well before the outbreak of the pandemic

Even before public announcements of the first cases of COVID-19 in Europe were made, at the end of January 2020, signals that something strange was happening were already circulating on social media. A new study of researchers at IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, published in Scientific Reports, has identified tracks of increasing concern about pneumonia cases on posts published on Twitter in seven countries, between the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020. The analysis of the posts shows that the "whistleblowing" came precisely from the geographical regions where the primary outbreaks later developed. To conduct the research, the authors first created a unique database with all the messages posted on Twitter containing the keyword "pneumonia" in the seven most spoken languages of the European Union - English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Polish, and Dutch - from December 2014 until 1 March 2020. The word "pneumonia" was chosen because the disease is the most severe condition induced by the SARS-CoV-2, and also because the 2020 flu season was milder than the previous ones, so there was no reason to think it to be responsible for all the mentions and worries. The researchers then made a number of adjustments…

The Earnheardts | Kids want their own YouTube channels

There have been times, as parents, we’ve dismissed these aspirations as fantasy. I mean, YouTuber was never on our “successful career” bingo card in high school career-ready class. We were encouraged to check out nice, safe careers like accountants or astronauts. Since they were old enough to turn on a computer, click a mouse and surf the web, our kids have been obsessed with YouTube. Our now-teens spent their elementary school years proudly professing, “I’m going to be a YouTuber when I grow up.” Not much has changed. They don’t watch TV, and have waning interests in Netflix and other streaming platforms. They’re laser-focused on their favorite YouTube/Twitch stars. These are the people they admire. These are the jobs they want. For our little Gen Z children, creating content for YouTube is the dream job. Fast forward a few years, and it’s happening again. Sadie and Ozzie (10- and 8-years-old, respectively) have the same YouTube dreams. In the past, our kids were too busy with other activities to advance their YouTube domination goals. But now, in the times of COVID-19, they want to take a shot turning those dreams into reality — while giving Mom and Dad a few nightmares…
