Industry Group Calls Privacy Sandbox Anticompetitive; Snapchat Launches TikTok Competitor

by Anthony Rifilato // Tuesday, November 24th, 2020 – 12:03 am Here’s today’s AdExchanger.com news round-up… Want it by email? Sign up here. A Line In The Sand An alliance of digital marketing companies filed a complaint with the UK’s competition authority on Monday calling for the regulator to block Google from implementing the technologies within the Chrome Privacy Sandbox. The sandbox houses Google’s proposals for third-party cookie alternatives. Marketers for an Open Web (MOW), the group behind the complaint, believe that Google’s stated rationale for phasing out third-party cookies in Chrome – that it’s being done in the name of consumer privacy – is rather a thinly veiled “ploy to move digital advertising away from the open web and beyond the reach of regulators.” James Rosewell, MOW’s director and CEO of 51Degrees, tells TechCrunch that the sandbox represents “an irreversible step towards a Google-owned ‘walled garden’ web where they control how businesses and users interact online.” MOW argues that regulators need more time to devise remedies to mitigate Google’s dominance before Google makes its move to remove third-party cookies in Chrome, which is by far the most penetrated web browser out there with nearly three quarters of global market share.…

(WMC) - A Mid-South mother says her son is the victim of racist and homophobic bullying at school, and she’s accusing district leaders of failing to take any action. The student is Black and attends West Collierville Middle School. His mother says he’s been called the N-word in person and online. And, she says, he was recently sent an invitation to another student’s Snapchat group - a group nicknamed the “Ku Klux Klan.” “It’s just incredibly hurtful,” she told WMC Action News 5. “It’s hurtful to know my child doesn’t want to go to school because of this. It’s hurtful to me as a parent.” She asked WMC not to reveal her name in order to protect her son. She’s speaking out because she says she wants the student who created the racist social media page disciplined, and she wants the Collierville School System to be more responsive in how it handles issues of racism and harassment. “There’s no way that a child should be subjected to this type of cyberbullying, there has to be zero tolerance for this type…

S$2 million increase in money cheated through WhatsApp, Facebook & Instagram scams for 1st …

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) received at least 1,188 reports of social media impersonation scams in the first six months of 2020. This was a marked increase from the same period last year — where only 83 cases were reported — with the SPF warning they have observed the "re-emergence" of such scams. In addition, the total amount cheated also increased to S$2.8 million, from at least S$726,000 in the first half of 2019. According to a news release, such cons typically involved the scammers impersonating the victim's friends using compromised or spoofed WhatsApp, Facebook, or Instagram accounts. They would then trick the victim into disclosing their credit card information and one-time password (OTP). Recent Qoo10 impersonation scams More recently, the SPF said, victims have received fake Qoo10 campaign messages from their friends over WhatsApp, purporting that they had won a lucky draw. The messages then led victims to fake Qoo10 websites requesting their personal details like mobile numbers, internet banking details, and OTP. These were obtained under the pretext of being a requirement for the victims to claim their prize. However, victims later discovered that unauthorised fraudulent transactions had been made on their credit cards and bank accounts without…
