Jury seated in New Mexico’s lawsuit against Facebook – KOAT

Jury seated in New Mexico’s lawsuit against Facebook Opening statements begin Wednesday in a lawsuit alleging Facebook allowed a third party to harvest the personal information of roughly 350,000 New Mexicans. SANTA FE, N.M. — New Mexico is taking on its third trial this year against Facebook, this time over claims that personal Facebook data belonging to state residents was shared with a third party. Jury selection wrapped up Tuesday at the First Judicial District Court, with opening statements scheduled to begin Wednesday morning. The state's lawsuit alleges that Meta improperly permitted the collection and sharing of personal user data. "The attorney general is suing Meta again, and he's got a really good batting average here," said John Day, KOAT legal expert. "He's batting a thousand in lawsuits against Meta." The legal battle follows two previous proceedings against Meta in state court this year. The first trial, held in March, focused on allegations that Meta's platforms harmed children. "And that was a jury award of over $350 million," Day said.  » Read More

WhatsApp doubles music clip length for status updates – 9to5Mac

Users who post status updates on WhatsApp can now publish longer music clips, with the length limit doubled to 30 seconds. Here are the details. WhatsApp status gets a 30-second music clip limit WABetaInfo reports that WhatsApp is rolling out support for music clips up to 30 seconds long in status updates. Status updates are WhatsApp’s equivalent to Instagram Stories, and previously, posts containing music were limited to 15 seconds. Now, users can select up to 30 seconds of a song to publish alongside a photo or share a music clip directly as a status update. Here’s WABetaInfo on how to choose the music clip duration under the new 30-second limit: After selecting a song from the music catalog, users can now see a clip duration picker in the music editor. The picker shows multiple options, up to 30 seconds. In this screen, users can scroll through them to select how many seconds of the song they want to include in the status. Although the maximum duration is 30 seconds, users can also choose a shorter clip if they prefer. Once they choose its duration, WhatsApp adds the music to the status update. As is usually the case with WhatsApp’s

WhatsApp Drops Support For Older Android Phones, iPhones Next – Channelnews

Home › Latest News › WhatsApp Drops Support For Older Android Phones, iPhones Next WhatsApp has ended support for smartphones running Android 5.0 and Android 5.1, leaving owners of some ageing handsets unable to continue using the messaging service. The change raises WhatsApp’s minimum requirement to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It applies to both WhatsApp Messenger and WhatsApp Business. The cutoff is based on the operating system rather than a specific manufacturer or handset. Older phones upgraded to Android 6.0 or later will continue working, while devices permanently stuck on Android 5.0 or 5.1 are no longer supported. Android 5.0 was released in 2014, followed by Android 5.1 in 2015. Both versions have been without security updates for years and may lack the technical capabilities required by newer WhatsApp features. Affected users should first check whether a system update is available by navigating to Settings, About Phone and Android Version, although the precise menu names vary between manufacturers. If the device cannot be updated to Android 6.0 or later, users will need to move to a newer smartphone to retain access to WhatsApp. Before switching devices, users are advised to back up their conversations through WhatsApp. Android users can save their

Britain and Europe: How close should we get? – British Future

With fresh talks on UK-EU relations approaching, new research from British Future finds that people see Brexit as a failure and want closer EU ties. But voters are undecided about what comes next, with uncertainty about the idea of another referendum, or a return to free movement. The research finds public support for a youth mobility scheme, and a majority who want the Prime Minister to pursue a closer relationship with Europe than Labour’s ‘Red Lines’ allow. The report, Britain and Europe: How close should we get?  Public opinion and the choices facing a new government, draws on a nationally representative survey of 3,007 UK adults and focus groups across England and Wales. It identifies five distinct public “tribes” on Europe, from the 22% who are “All In” on rejoining to the 19% who remain “Firmly Out”. The largest group, making up more than four in ten of the public, sit in a moveable middle: open to closer cooperation but unpersuaded on the terms. It also includes detailed sections on public attitudes to freedom of movement, and on UK-EU cooperation on asylum.

The Hudson Star-Observer: Now on LinkedIn | Local News | hudsonstarobserver.com

The Hudson Star-Observer launched a LinkedIn page, where readers can get updates with a focus on the local business community, the newspaper announced Tuesday. Since 1854 — through several name changes and other iterations — the paper has delivered news to the St. Croix County community. Today, the newspaper features a weekly print product and a five-day-per-week newsletter. The Star-Observer and the River Falls Journal operate under the same editorial team. Stories from both go into the Star-Observer's print edition, which hits newsstands every Thursday. The Star-Observer and River Falls Journal now operate out of KPT Collaborative, a coworking space located at 522 Second St. in Hudson. The Star-Observer continues to look for ways to reach a more digital audience, without conflicting with its current print and web product. In addition to new social media pages, the news outlet plans to roll out a video product in the coming months.  The Star-Observer will still post updates on its other platforms, including its Facebook page, but the LinkedIn page will be a new avenue for readers to stay informed. Unlike the other avenues, it will center on the Star-Observer's business coverage and other news that appeals to LinkedIn's core audience. Have a LinkedIn page?
