The lawyer for the parents of a Prince George boy who died of suicide after a 2023 sextortion said July 28 that the California company behind Snapchat is trying to escape accountability for failing to protect children from sexual predators. In BC Supreme Court in Prince George, Claire Hunter opposed the application by lawyers for Snap Inc. to dismiss Nicola Smith and Ryan Cleland’s lawsuit against the social media company. Smith and Cleland’s 12-year-old son, Carson, took his own life on Oct. 12, 2023 after falling prey to online sexual extortion. Last October’s notice of civil claim seeks damages for negligence, failure to warn and negligent or fraudulent misrepresentation. NH teen, mother sue Snapchat parent company over alleged leak of private images MANCHESTER, N.H. — A New Hampshire teenager and her mother are suing Snap Inc., alleging the company chose money over the safety of its young users at the expense of human dignity. “Sophie Doe,” as she is identified in the complaint, was 14 years old when her Snapchat account was compromised. Images she had saved in the app’s “My Eyes Only” feature were allegedly stolen and later appeared on websites that publish and sell child sexual abuse material. The platform’s “My Eyes Only” feature is designed for “Snaps that you want to keep extra private!” and is password-protected, according to Snapchat’s website. The plaintiff, now 19, said she was misled into taking and saving explicit pictures that were later compromised. The complaint argued she took the pictures because the “My Eyes Only” feature essentially promised security. “Sophie Doe would not have created and/or saved nude and sexually explicit material on Snapchat if it were not for Snap’s representation that My Eyes Only was private, safe and accessible only to her,” the complaint said. The defendant, Kyle Svara, also admitted to distributing child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Between May 2020 and February 2021, Kyle Svara, 26, used social engineering tactics and posed as a Snap Inc. representative to phish for Snapchat credentials from over 4,500 victims. He accessed approximately 517 women's accounts without permission to download nude or semi-nude photos and then enabled two-factor authentication to lock them out. Investigators also discovered approximately 530 images and 600 videos depicting CSAM within Svara's cloud storage account. Svara also advertised his hacking services online, trading stolen images and offering to access accounts for clients. One such client, former track and field coach Steve Waithe, was sentenced to five years in prison for sextortion after hiring Svara to hack student-athletes' accounts. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office recently investigated a puppy-related scam, arrested a man after his motor vehicle appointment and helped off-roaders after their vehicle got stuck in the backcountry. The following incidents occurred between Monday, July 6, and Sunday, July 12. Deputies issued citations to two people who others reported for welding in their driveways without the exemptions needed to do so during Stage 2 fire restrictions. One incident was in Dillon and the other in Summit Cove. On July 7, a man in unincorporated Breckenridge reported that someone he did not personally know blackmailed him with nude photos he sent them on Snapchat. The person threatened to share the man’s photos if he did not pay the person money. A deputy called the person, who the man had thought was a woman, and spoke to a man who did not speak English and quickly ended the call. The man did not lose any money and did not want to participate in further investigation.
