San Jose mayor wants Meta, Snapchat and TikTok to shut down sideshow content

Seeking to clamp down on sideshows’ wreaking havoc in San Jose, Mayor Matt Mahan is asking social media companies to shut down videos showcasing the raucous street gatherings that often attract hundreds or thousands to events and result in a deluge of widely shared videos. The request is raising a mountain of practical and legal questions from content moderation experts who contend that reining in the videos could be exceedingly difficult for companies to do effectively or ethically. Mahan sent a letter to TikTok, Snapchat and Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, requesting they boot users off their platforms for 30 days if they share videos about sideshows — and indefinitely if users don’t stop after an initial violation. At sideshows — which originated in Oakland four decades ago — a driver or multiple drivers take over a blocked-off intersection and do stunts such as doughnuts, sometimes with passengers hanging out precariously from the car’s windows. They have led to injuries and even death and leave intersections with streaks of tire marks. “These events are fueled by social media,” an Aug. 30 letter from the mayor reads. “They are increasingly spread, consumed, and attended primarily for the purpose of generating

San Jose mayor wants tech giants to moderate sideshow content – San José Spotlight

San Jose Police Chief Anthony Mata and Mayor Matt Mahan speak at a news conference on using social media to stop sideshows on Aug. 31, 2023. Photo by Jana Kadah.San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan is asking social media companies for help in solving the city’s growing sideshow struggle. Mahan wants big name platforms such as Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok to temporarily suspend accounts that post about local sideshow activities. He said at a news conference today that the companies are willing to meet to discuss if this is possible. Sideshows are a Bay Area phenomenon born in the 1980s where drivers gather in vacant lots or public intersections to show off cars and perform stunts like doughnuts. Sideshows have grown in recent years from a few dozen cars to hundreds. San Jose Police Chief Anthony Mata said it’s become infinitely more dangerous and popular due to social media. “Before social media they were probably using flyers, and obviously (social media) is an easier way to communicate,” Mata told San José Spotlight. “It invites hundreds of people right to these types of events.” San Jose made watching sideshows illegal in 2019 and outlawed their promotion two years

TikTok's AR Effect House Comes Out of Beta Mode, Expanding Creator Opportunities

TikTok has marked its latest milestone in AR development, with its Effect House AR studio for creators now coming out of beta mode after more than a year of development. Much like Snapchat’s ‘Lens Studio’ and Meta’s ‘Spark AR’ platform, TikTok’s Effect House enables creators to build their own AR effects for the app, with a range of templates and tools available to facilitate the process. And the advanced AR platform has already sparked significant interest and usage. As per TikTok: “Since launching version 1.0 in 2022, effects made by Effect House’s community of creators have inspired more than 21 billion videos, garnering more than 8.6 trillion views globally and bringing together more than 400,000 members on the Effect House Discord.” TikTok actually launched the initial version of Effect House with selected developers back in 2021, as an in-app tool, which was eventually expanded into the separate Effect House platform that’s now being used by creators. Which is a great way for TikTok to maximize its potential to tap into the latest trends. By expanding its creative insight beyond its in-house team, that then enables TikTok to get a broader range of effects into the app, which increases its chances of

DeAndre Ayton reportedly dating active adult film star, NBA fans left in DISBELIEF

Deandre Ayton has been seen in a Snapchat video with pornstar Katt Leya (Images via X / formerly Twitter) A recent Snapchat story featuring NBA player Deandre Ayton and adult film star Katt Leya has gone viral across social media. The video, which showed the Phoenix Suns center combing Leya’s hair, drew immediate attention and led to speculation and comparison with another NBA star’s past incidents. Before the controversy could gain more momentum, Leya took to Instagram to post an old photo of herself and Ayton dining in a restaurant. The image was captioned, “2019… So stop the Zion comparison,” hinting at their long-standing connection. This, however, was a reference to the incident involving Zion Williamson, a player for the New Orleans Pelicans, who made headlines when a video surfaced online showing him in an intimate situation with an adult film actress while his partner was pregnant. The controversy escalated when the actress expressed disappointment after Williamson hosted a significant gender reveal party. She also mentioned being late on her menstrual cycle, hinting at potential implications for the NBA star.
