Snapchat is putting children at risk by becoming the go-to “gossip” site for teenage gang sex and violence, an investigation has found.The messaging app - widely used by children as young as eight - is fuelling the spread of illicit sexual and violent content because of its design, according to the study by Revealing Reality, a research body which has worked for the watchdog Ofcom and BBC.It has become the “platform of choice” because of three key features: that messages disappear after 24 hours, that teenagers can be “friends” with up to 6,000 people and its capability to set up chat groups of up to 101 people.This meant Shapchat had become a “local news site” for many young, urban teenagers on which they filmed assaults, raids of people’s homes and sexual abuse including even a rape.“As a place to share illicit content, it makes sense that Snapchat is the platform of choice. A SOCIAL MEDIA account used to share videos of violent incidents in Fife schools has been removed from Snapchat. The social media company confirmed this week that the account had been taken down after a Fife-based Scottish Liberal Democrat MP expressed her concern. Wendy Chamberlain MP, along with North East Fife MSP Willie Rennie, welcomed the news which has also seen Snapchat working to identify associated accounts. Sensationalising violence in schools can only make the problem worse and is damaging to the children involved. Jeremy Schobel, 31, has been suspended from his job as an English teacher at Harriton High School in Bryn Mawr. According to court documents, the FBI said Schobel admitted to posing as a young girl on social media and communicating with many others for years — doing so to obtain sexually explicit images of girls. Federal authorities tracked some of his Snapchat use to the Harriton High campus. The Lower Merion School District said it has no knowledge of any contact Schobel may have had with students. Schobel is facing two counts related to manufacturing child pornography. He is being held ahead of a hearing scheduled in federal court next week. A MAN from North Yorkshire has been jailed after using Snapchat to attempt to engage a teenage girl in sexual communication. David Wesling, 48, from Littlethorpe Lane in Littlethorpe, near Ripon, has been found guilty of attempting to engage a 13-year-old girl in sexual communications - for which he has been jailed for 32 months. Wesling's behaviour was identified after he engaged with a child profile on Snapchat. The defendant has pleaded guilty to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, facilitating the offence of sexual activity in the presence of a child, causing them to watch a sexual act and breaching a sexual harm prevention order. olice officers said the incidents occurred between April 27 and May 16 this year. Investigating officer, Detective Constable Kerri Jones, of North Yorkshire Police’s Online Child Abuse Team, said: “This is not the first time that Wesling has attempted to have sexual communications with a child.
