(KSEE/KGPE) – A former U.S. Navy sailor was found guilty of sexually exploiting a minor on Snapchat, according to a statement released by the Department of Justice on Friday. Officials say 28-year-old Christopher Jeorge Millican of Coalinga was convicted by a federal jury on Thursday for producing and receiving child pornography via the social media app. Court documents show that a parent reported to Snapchat that someone (later identified as Millican) had been engaging in inappropriate communication with an 11-year-old girl. Following a review of the content sent, Snapchat contacted law enforcement which resulted in Millican being identified. He was on active duty with the U.S. Navy at the time. Millican is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 24. Federal officials say he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison and a maximum prison term of 50 years.

FRESNO, Calif — A federal jury found a former U.S. Navy sailor from Coalinga guilty Friday of sexually exploiting an 11-year-old girl and several other children on Snapchat.According to court documents and evidence, in July 2018 a parent reported to Snapchat that someone, later identified as Christopher Jeorge Millican, 28, of Coalinga, had engaged in inappropriate communications with an 11-year-old girl.Snapchat looked into Millican's account and discovered sexually explicit images and video of minors, according to court documents.Snapchat reported the conduct to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. The center then contacted the Central California Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force in Fresno.Task force investigators identified several children and one of the girls testified during the trial that Millican coerced her into creating and sending him sexually explicit images.According to court documents, Millican was on active duty with the U.S. Navy during the offenses.“The conviction in this case means that the defendant will no longer be in a position to carry out his criminal acts against innocent and vulnerable children,” said U.S. Attorney Talbert in a statement.“The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly with its federal and local law enforcement partners to protect and seek justice for these…

LONDON (AP) — Russian regulators have fined chat service WhatsApp and Snapchat for failing to store Russian users’ data on local servers, part of government efforts to control online activity. A Moscow court on Thursday imposed an 18 million ruble ($300,000) fine on chat service WhatsApp and a 1 million ruble penalty on disappearing message platform Snapchat. The fines followed a complaint by Russia’s state communications regulator, Roskomnadzor. The Russian government has been trying for years to establish greater control over the internet and social media, an effort that has intensified in recent months as it tries to limit the flow of information about Ukraine. Neither Facebook parent Meta Platforms Inc., which owns WhatsApp, nor Snap Inc., which runs the Snapchat app, responded to a request for comment. The court said it was fining WhatsApp for repeatedly refusing to localize data of Russian users. WhatsApp received its first Russian fine, for 4 million rubles, in August 2021. A Moscow court also fined Apple 2 million rubles (about $34,000) earlier this month over the data storage issue.
