Angela Lang/CNET Snapchat is ramping up its efforts to combat illicit drug deals on its app. Parent company Snap on Tuesday shared an update about its latest efforts to stop the push of narcotics on the platform with a greater focus on teens. Among the changes, Snapchat is updating its Quick Add suggestion feature to reduce interactions between kids and strangers. "In order to be discoverable in Quick Add by someone else, users under 18 will need to have a certain number of friends in common with that person," the company said in a blog post. Previously, the app would recommend possible friends based on mutual connections, regardless of whether you know the person in real life. A 14-year-old girl who was allegedly kidnapped and abused by two men was rescued by police who tracked her down using Snapchat, according to the French news outlet France 3.  The girl, whose identity was not mentioned in news reports, was originally from Ardèche and had run away from home on January 10, according to the radio station France Bleu, translated from French. She had previously ran away from home, France Bleu reported. The teenager used her phone to contact her mother from an apartment in Marseille on Friday morning, France 3 reported. Snapchat is changing up its friend recommendation feature following calls for increased safety on the app. The company is making it harder for adult strangers to find teens in its app by limiting friend recommendations in its “Quick Add” feature.  Now, the app won’t show the accounts of 13 to 17-year-olds in Quick Add unless they have “a certain number of accounts in common,” according to Snap. While the change won’t prevent adults and teens from connecting at all, it could make it more difficult for strangers to find teens they don’t already know. In a blog post, the company said the change was part of its work to "combat the fentanyl epidemic" and keep drug dealers from finding "new ways to abuse Snapchat." The company has faced scrutiny over its handling of drug dealers on its platform in recent months.
