Welcome to Season 2, Episode 2 of the ESPN PRod Pod, the official podcast of the ESPN Communications Department. The PRod Pod takes you behind ESPN’s unmatched storytelling by introducing the people behind the content – who they are, where they’re from and how they create the magic.Talk about making an impact. ESPN Vice President, Digital Production Mike Foss first arrived in Bristol, Conn., in 2017; less than five years later he oversees the burgeoning, industry-leading ESPN digital empire, including ESPN’s YouTube presence, SportsCenter on Snapchat, multiple digital studio and live (often on-site) presentations, Podcasts, ESPN+ studio offerings and the newly-launched, mid-day program, “Debateable.”As Communications Associate Producer and PRod Pod host Jon McLeod discovers, what is surely NOT debateable is how Foss and his team are impacting the way fans consume ESPN.“We had 1.2 billion views in October,” Foss tells McLeod, “no media publisher has ever done that.”And virtually every month, ESPN Digital eclipses its previous highs across key metrics. Foss shares his overall philosophy for digital content and zeroes in on the overflowing goodness of ESPN’s YouTube page, which he tells the PRod Pod, offers a “comprehensive representation of” what ESPN provides. In the concluding “Fab 5” segment with ESPN…

A mystery virus was doing the rounds, and nobody knew how it was spread or what its impact would be. It was a frightening time for the queer people working at what was then called Gay Switchboard – a small, grassroots organisation that offered advice and information to queer people over the phone. Today, that charity is simply called Switchboard, and it offers support to the UK’s LGBT+ community. Lisa Power was one of the only lesbians working for Switchboard when the mysterious virus that would later be identified as HIV emerged – and she remembers the fear, the confusion, and the feeling of helplessness that prevailed. “You have to remember that at the start, we had no clue,” she tells PinkNews. “Gay men were starting to die – not huge numbers at the start, and nobody was sure why – and of course, I’m sure a number of people died who weren’t diagnosed in those early days. We were all just trying to get a grip on it, and for Switchboard, that meant a lot of information was coming…

For those without access to water, the tool also works as an augmented reality display.“We know young Australians care passionately about combating climate change and will also experience its worst impacts in the future if we fail to act now,” Snapchat general manager for Asia-Pacific Kathryn Carter said.“As a platform that reaches over 90 per cent of young Australians aged 13-24, we feel a deep responsibility to take action at the pace and scale that is needed to combat the worst impacts of climate change, both globally and here in Australia.”By swiping up on the post, which will go live on Thursday, users are able to help bring the reef back to life both virtually and in reality, with every swipe equalling one heat-tolerant coral planted by the GBRF.The aim is to plant one million such corals over summer.“If…

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it had found that last year's acquisition of Giphy would reduce competition between social media platforms and in display advertising.Facebook, which was recently rebranded as Meta Platforms, said it could appeal against the CMA's decision. It has four weeks to appeal. "The tie-up between Facebook and Giphy has already removed a potential challenger in the display advertising market," said Stuart McIntosh, chair of the independent investigation on Facebook-Giphy for the CMA."By requiring Facebook to sell Giphy, we are protecting millions of social media users and promoting competition and innovation in digital advertising." Facebook said it disagreed with the decision."We are reviewing the decision and considering all options, including appeal," a Meta spokesperson said in a statement. The CMA in October fined https://www.reuters.com/technology/britain-fines-facebook-70-mln-breaching-order-giphy-deal-2021-10-20 the company a record $70 million for breaching an order imposed during its investigation into the acquisition, having said in August that it may need Facebook to sell Giphy https://www.reuters.com/technology/facebook-may-have-sell-giphy-britains-competition-concerns-2021-08-12.COMPETITOR ACCESS Facebook bought Giphy, a…

Read moreDetailsBy Becky Bargh 29-Nov-2021 Marketing Beauty empire exited four major social channels over unethical practices on Black Friday Mark Constantine Ethical beauty brand Lush, famed for its eclectic bath bomb collection, is expected to be hit with a £10m loss in sales after quitting four major social media channels last week. But boss Mark Constantine said that’s a price he’s willing to pay to improve the safety of his shoppers. Speaking to The Guardian, the 69-year-old acknowledged the losses for turning his back on social, but insisted that he was “happy to lose £10m” for doing so. The business committed the ultimate snub to the four major channels: Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok, by shutting down operations on the busiest shopping day of the season, Black Friday (26 November), but Constantine said he had “no choice”, after whistleblowers drew attention to the negative impacts of the platforms. “We’ve tightened up over the Covid period, it won’t destroy us,” he added. Lush will not longer operate on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok According to the publication, Constantine was concerned by leaked Facebook research, which revealed that its picture-sharing app Instagram made body image issues worse for teenage girls – a key…

And it sucks. On the app, everyone can share links. You can go shopping. Influencers can create their own online stores, and more. With the help of Facebook's newly rebranded Meta, Instagram is well on its way to becoming a super app — basically one app in which you can do practically anything. It's a digital ecosystem all on its own, a place where you can go shopping and order a car and message your friends and set up doctor appointments. You don't need to have any other app on your phone. There are plenty of good reasons users might be attracted to a super app. It's convenient, everything is in one place, and the user experience is simple as you don't have to learn to navigate multiple different platforms. But, as Instagram adds more and more tools, it becomes less and less useful. Scrolling through Instagram in the hope of finding a post from someone you actually know is like looking for a designer shirt in your size in the bargain bin during a…
