Meet the youngsters from smaller cities in India who are making AR lenses for the world

A face painted in green, blue and orange stares back at you from a Snapchat camera, like a collage representing the myriad colours of Holi, celebrated with gusto in India, particularly its North. At another time, one can even grow cat or rabbit ears and whiskers with large eyes. Why, you can even get the colour of the iris changed to blue or golden. A piece of psychedelic art?Nope. These are, in lens creation parlance, filters (static overlays over the camera) or lenses. In other words, augmented reality (AR) animations with the use of 3D modeling, which can be created using tools offered by Snapchat’s Lens Studio or Facebook and Instagram’s Spark AR Studio. That itself would be creative hype, but the joy is magnified in the knowledge that many of these lenses are being created by college going kids from India’s rural regions and are accessed by people across the world.Moneycontrol spoke to four such lens creators, who in addition to being popular campus figures, are also raking in the moolah by working with firms in India and overseas.Take for instance 20-year-old Thakur Vivek Singh, an official lens creator for Snapchat. A native of Madhya Pradesh, he is currently pursuing his final…

Nickelodeon forms nostalgic apparel partnership with Snapchat

Nickelodeon has linked up with Snapchat to tap into fan culture and bring outfits featuring some of its classic characters to Snap’s Bitmoji avatars. Snapchatters and Bitmoji users will be able to choose from nine curated outfits, featuring references to SpongeBob SquarePants, Rugrats, Garfield, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which can all be customised further. Users will see their chosen Nickelodeon designs across Snapchat and Bitmoji, including in chat and games, on Snap Map, in lenses, and in personalised content like Bitmoji Stories. “This partnership combines two brands that embody positivity, humour and fun at the heart of everything they do, and we’re excited to launch a collection that caters to our Gen Z and millennial audiences who grew up with these nostalgic characters – and that are still very much loved to this day,” said John Imah, Head of Games & Entertainment Partnerships at Snap Inc. The collaboration with Nickelodeon builds on similar partnerships Snapchat has entered into in the past half-year or so, including with Ralph Lauren and Levi’s. In August, Snap launched its ‘Mix and Match’ Bitmoji feature alongside Ralph Lauren. And it followed this up in December by bringing denim to Bitmoji via Levi’s. In both…

Your Cats & Dogs Can Join in Your AR Antics with These Pet-Friendly Snapchat Lenses

So, this week, we're highlighting five AR experiences you can share with your own furry friends, so I can get Lucy and Dorian some work. (Unfortunately, Dorian conveniently slept through most of the...Snapshoot.)Two notes before we jump in: First, any of these Lenses work with a cat or a dog, regardless of its title. Dear Abby: My sister, 14, lies to our parents, but I know the truth

DEAR ABBY: A few weeks ago, my 14-year-old sister snuck out and had sex with a boy she met on Snapchat. I know this because my distraught mother decided to tell me. My sister lied to my parents repeatedly about it, but later, when they went through her phone, they found explicit images that a girl her age should never have. Furthermore, after they confiscated her phone, she acquired a new one from a friend and continues to message boys through Snapchat. She continues to lie to my parents when they ask her if she’s communicating with anyone. She has been hanging around a toxic group of girls at school, and she’s very impressionable. She isn’t a bad person, but all this lying has left me confused and upset. What can I do to help her? — HER WORRIED BROTHER IN GEORGIA DEAR BROTHER: The age of consent in Georgia is 16. Do your parents know the identity and age of the person your sister met on Snapchat? The inappropriate pictures your parents discovered on her phone could be considered child pornography, and there are laws against it. It’s very important that your sister understand how dangerous what she has…
