But their Snapchat boasts backfired, as later that night the police began investigating them for murder. Detectives used the footage to help track the killers' movements on the night of October 20 2019, when 26-year-old Solomon Robinson was stabbed to death with a machete in Scarborough. And the video would ultimately be used to help bring a conviction against four of the men who stood trial accused of murder, Dawid Goral, 21, Callon Brass, 22, Kieran Watkinson, 19, and Stevie Low, 23. The other defendant Stefan Selvage, 19, admitted murder the day before the trial. The court was shown the Snapchat footage that was captured just hours before the appalling stabbing which shows the group at a party together where drugs, knives and a large amount of money can be seen. 'De-risk the path forward': Why Dr. Squatch sees value in Snapchat as it diversifies its media mix

This time last year, direct-to-consumer men’s soap brand Dr. Squatch had little to no ad spend dedicated to Snapchat. But as the company continues to diversify its digital media strategy, it is putting 10% of its digital ad spend on the platform, according to CMO Josh Friedman. It’s a move the brand plans to continue in the future via in-feed video ads, Friedman said. Like many DTC brands, Dr. Squatch is pushing to diversify away from Facebook and Instagram although the platforms have been an integral part of the brand’s digital media strategy.  “We’re pretty agile and we’re looking to spend on what’s most effective in the moment,” Friedman said, noting that Dr. Squatch now sees the platform as more than just an experimental channel. With its newfound Snapchat budget, the brand has utilized in-feed ads on the platform, producing paid video content geared toward Snapchat’s Gen-Z audience. While Snapchat is a growing channel, Facebook and YouTube serve as the brand’s bread and butter, taking up more than an estimated 85% of the digital media budget, Friedman said. Currently, the brand dedicates an estimated 65% of its digital ad spend to Facebook, 20% to YouTube, and 10% to Snapchat with remaining dollars…

Woman charged in Capitol melee says Proud Boys recruited her

BELLE PLAINE, Kan. — An Arizona woman charged in connection with the Jan. 6 onslaught of the U.S. Capitol bragged in a Snapchat video that she was recently recruited by a Kansas City chapter of the Proud Boys, a neofascist organization that describes itself as “Western chauvinists” and has long forbidden female members.Felicia Konold’s claim that the chapter recruited her and she was “with them now,” even though she’s not from the Kansas City area, has intrigued experts who study extremist right-wing movements.“It is ironic that such a deeply misogynistic organization has attracted someone who is a woman to join their organization,” said Eric Ward, a senior fellow with the Southern Poverty Law Center. “It tells us there is dissention in the ranks of Proud Boys right now.”Details of the video surfaced last week in a probable cause affidavit against Konold, 26, of Tucson, who is charged with conspiracy, civil disorder and other federal charges stemming from the melee.Konold sounded almost euphoric in the Snapchat video she posted after the Capitol attack, saying she never could have imagined having such an influence on the events that unfolded that day. She laughingly references “all my boys, behind me, holding me up…

Carry on the CNY spirit with Snapchat's festive Bitmoji and Lenses

In life before the pandemic, we used to host large reunion dinners and visit relatives’ homes. This year, many of us will be celebrating a more subdued Chinese New Year due to the Movement Control Order restrictions and protocols. However, this annual festivity does not need to be cancelled - it can still go on albeit through a different experience. Staying safe is our priority this year. So, even without being physically present, we can still celebrate this festive season virtually in a unique way on Snapchat. 1. Wear a mask, but make it fashion The first step of staying safe is always wearing your mask correctly. Send a Bitmoji with a festive-themed mask to remind your loved ones to always wear a mask wherever they go. 2. E-angpows are the new norm Just because we can’t do house visits, doesn’t mean the tradition of giving and receiving angpows stop! These days, various banks and e-wallet providers offer e-angpow services. Drop your loved ones a subtle - not really - hint with your personalized Bitmoji, just like this! 3. Virtual decorations are equally important Keep the CNY spirit high up with more festive decorations, like lanterns and peach blossom flowers.…
