EARLY YEARS: Snapchat and other social media being used by drug dealers to target kids

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - A couple weeks ago, celebrity TV therapist Laura Berman revealed her 16-year-old son had died of a drug overdose.Berman said a drug dealer had connected with him on Snapchat, and sold him a prescription drug laced with fentanyl.“Specifically, the reason why Snapchat is utilized in this way is because- the way that the app itself is set up is pretty much once it is opened and looked at, it disappears,” says Ashley Richardson, who visits classrooms and talks to kids and teens through her work with the Prevention Council of Roanoke County. She hears first hand just how easy it is for parents to miss the codes kids use on social media.“They’re using pictures and acronyms. They’re not even speaking in sentences. Things like a maple leaf are being utilized for marijuana, Richardson says.Snapchat is one of the most popular apps for buying and selling drugs, because the messages automatically disappear.Profiles and accounts can also be created and deleted quickly.“You can find a plethora of profile names. And you can just add these people on Snapchat. These are based on Bitmojis, so it’s not actually a human face as a profile picture,” says Richardson.Nancy Hans is the…

Report: Twitter Wants to Buy ShareChat to Rival TikTok

Email From Fleets to newsletters and now short-form video content, Twitter wants to cover all its bases. Internet users are currently riding an increased interest in quick, easy-to-consume video content. Social media platforms were very quick to adapt stories, or disappearing portrait photos and videos, soon after Snapchat emerged in 2011. Now, Twitter is looking to clone TikTok's features in a similar fashion... or better yet, buy another app that already has. Three sources told TechCrunch that Twitter was looking to acquire Indian social media startup ShareChat in order to push it to compete with TikTok, a Chinese video-sharing service that has exploded in popularity over the last few years. India banned TikTok in June 2020, which has since caused local startups and international companies to try and master the short-form video format. Twitter reportedly offered to buy ShareChat for $1.1 billion, on top of a $900 million investment. However, the deal fell through for reasons unspecified. Some users speculate it's because ShareChat partnered with Snapchat recently to launch Camera Kit. Although ShareChat claims to have over 160 million users, it is said that Twitter's primary interest was in Moj, a short-form video app that ShareChat owns. Moj describes itself a stage for "never-ending entertaining videos to watch…

Facebook shuts down Instagram accounts advertising illegal St Patricks Day rave

FACEBOOK HAS SHUT down social media profiles advertising an illegal “lockdown rave” after profiles gained traction online. The event, which has been advertised on both Instagram and Snapchat, would be in breach of Level 5 Covid-19 restrictions if it went ahead. “We have restricted access to this account as it violates government Covid-19 health guidelines,” said a Facebook company spokesperson. “We are committed to supporting the HSE’s work to keep people safe and informed, including on the importance of social distancing.”  While Level 5 restrictions officially end on 5 March, it is all but certain that they will be extended into April. Level 5 restrictions prevent social gatherings of any type, with exceptions for social bubbles or for essential family reasons like childcare. According to posts seen by TheJournal.ie, the illegal rave was planned to be held in Dublin or Kildare, and organisers were planning on announcing the location 12 hours before the event began. Posts by the organiser before the page was taken down reported that they had sold over 1200 tickets to the event. The group’s Snapchat profile has also been taken down, due to Snapchat’s community safety policy against using the app for any illegal purposes. “Our…

This grim list includes a cowardly sex attacker who targeted a girl in a nightmare ordeal as she walked home from school. Judges dealt with one young man who groomed girls on Snapchat before subjecting them to sexual abuse, some of which the sick pervert filmed on his mobile phone, and another predator who used the social network to groom a child before repeatedly raping her. Courts heard details of how deviants - including two university workers - collecting sickening images and in one case, even planned to have sex with a 13-year-old girl while her mum watched. Meanwhile, a monstrous paedophile guilty of historic sex offences was also sentenced. But thanks to brave victims who were willing to speak out - and in some cases go through the ordeal of giving evidence at trials - these sick individuals were locked up, meaning our communities are safer.
