Snapchat introduces new barcode scanning capacity for selective products

Snapchat declared about upcoming additions for its snap camera as its annual partner summit in June. That also includes the ability to identify dog and plant breeds. Along with that users will get additional product information such as nutrition data. All one needs to do is ‘scan’ a plant, dog, or product with its camera function. Now, Snapchat jumps to the next step and bring some more doors of opportunity for the users. Users will be able to scan even wine and food labels to gather more information. It works as; you have to hold your finger on the screen while viewing a product’s barcode. Then you will receive a new listing by the app carrying all the nutrition information of the product. However, when it comes to wine, you will even get review data. This additional product data gets benefits via third-party apps like Vivino and Yuka. The name of the app branding would be visible at the top of each listing. This connection enables Snapchat with a range of scan options. And that is also on established databases. It means that the users can scan a wide range of products to get additional data and insight. After the dog breed scanner got added in June, the new inclusion takes this capacity further. Earlier users could identify products via Amazon and music via Shazam. Now, Snap has partnered with both Coca Cola and McDonald’s on scannable promotions as per their logos. Snapchat in a 2015 field patent expanded a summary of the possibilities of its visual recognition tools. That followed, “For example, a photograph including an object recognized as a restaurant may result in the user being presented with photo filters that overlay a menu of the restaurant on the photograph.” This additional contextual info will also enable businesses...

Whats up hiya, and welcome again to Week in Overview. Final week, I wrote about the potential of a pending social media detente, this week I’m speaking a couple of rising menace to Facebook’s biz. Should you’re studying this on the TechCrunch web site, you may get this in your inbox right here, and comply with my tweets here. And whereas I’ve you, my colleague Megan Rose Dickey formally launched her new TechCrunch e-newsletter, Human Capital! It covers labor and variety and inclusion in tech, go subscribe! Picture: TechCrunch First off, let me let you know how laborious it was to withstand writing about Quibi this week, however these takes got here in highly regarded the second that information dropped, and I wrote a bit of bit about it right here already. All I’ll say, is that whereas Quibi had its personal distinctive cell issues, except Apple modifications course or dumps a ton of cash shopping for up content material to fill its again library, I believe TV+ is subsequent on the chopping block. Where_Quibi_Went_Wrong-version4__FINAL.docx — Lucas Matney (@lucasmtny) October 21, 2020 This week, I’m digging into one other once-maligned startup, although this one has activated fairly the turnaround within the final two years. Snap, maker of Snapchat, delivered a killer earnings report this week and because of this, traders deemed to ship the inventory value hovering. Its market cap has almost doubled for the reason that begin of September and it’s clear that Wall Road really believes that Snap might meaningfully improve its footprint and problem Fb. This Week in Apps: Quibi dies, Snapchat soars, Halide upgrades for iPhone 12

Welcome back to This Week in Apps, the TechCrunch series that recaps the latest OS news, the applications they support and the money that flows through it all. The app industry is as hot as ever, with a record 204 billion downloads and $120 billion in consumer spending in 2019. People are now spending three hours and 40 minutes per day using apps, rivaling TV. Apps aren’t just a way to pass idle hours — they’re a big business. In 2019, mobile-first companies had a combined $544 billion valuation, 6.5x higher than those without a mobile focus. Quibi dies…and no one was surprised There was so much wrong with Quibi’s premise that it’s sometimes hard to even know where to start. But at the core, its problem was that it fundamentally misunderstood how, when and why users would watch video on their phones. The company’s thinking was that you could fund high-production value content ($100K/minute, yikes) then chop it up into smaller “bites,” add a technology layer, then call this a reinvention of cinema. The reality is there was little demand for this sort of content, and it didn’t fit with how people want to be entertained on their phones. When people want to appreciate high-quality filmmaking (or even TV production), they tend to want a bigger screen — they’ve spent money for their fancy high-def or 4K TV, after all. Pre-COVID, they might even pay to go a movie theater. On mobile, the production value of content is far less of a concern, if it even registers. Quibi also misunderstood what users want to watch in terms of video on their phones when they have a few minutes to kill. By positioning its app in this space, it had to compete with numerous and powerful sources for “short-form” content — existing apps like YouTube, TikTok, Facebook (e.g....

Teesside Crown Court heard how David Walls was made subject to a 10 year sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) in 2017. Ian West, prosecuting, told the court how he was convicted of attempting to incite a girl under the age of 16 to engage in sexual activity and attempting to meet a girl under 16 following grooming. He said Walls, 41, also received a sentence of 16 months in prison, suspended for two years. A SHPO governs a sex offender's internet use in an attempt to protect the public. The court in Middlesbrough heard how police attended outside the defendant's workplace on January 22 for a review of the order. Officers examined his iPhone, as well as an iPad, and discovered he had created accounts on three apps. Walls was found to have been using Tinder, Kik and Snapchat without notifying officers. He also admitted deleting his history, which is banned under the order. Mr West told the court how Walls initially told police that the iPad belonged to his brother. He said he later admitted that the device was his and he had lied. Mr West said police made enquiries and, although he had had conversations, there was no evidence to suggest he was contacting anyone under 16. Walls, of Colwyn Road, Hartlepool, pleaded guilty to six breaches of a sexual harm prevention order. He also admitted three breaches a notification requirement. Michele Turner, defending, told the court...

TikTok, Who? Snapchat Lets You Add Sounds to Snaps Post Capture – Here's How

The feature that would help Snapchat gain some of its popularity back and put the app in the ring with TikTok is finally official. Sounds on Snapchat went live – here’s what you can do with your Snaps.Sounds on Snapchat was teased this summer as a way to reclaim some of the app’s audience from TikTok. Now, the feature is live on iOS and it’s something you should really explore if you’ve been using the social media platform. For the first time, you can enhance your Snaps with music from well-known artists like Justin Bieber but also emerging talent. Actually, Justin Bieber and benny blanco’s song “Lonely” appeared as an exclusive on Snapchat’s Featured Sounds as an incentive for users to try it out.Unsure what can you do with this new feature? Well, for starters you can add music to your Stories or direct messages either pre-capture or post-capture, so that’s a relief. Info such as song title, artist and album appear in the Snap with Sounds, when the user swipes to view more. The major difference between Sounds on Snapchat and TikTok’s service is the former’s ability to play the full song on your chosen streaming platform by clicking the “Play This Song” link. On TikTok, you get a page of other videos using the same song, with only some of them allowing you to listen to the entire song. That is an extra step many users tend to avoid, preferring to check out the song on YouTube directly, by typing out the name and artist. However, Snapchat is making this query needless.Considering the agreements made with publishers and labels that span over several years, Snapchat is in the position to give its users not only a way to enhance their Snaps that is more convenient than TikTok’s but an impressive library...
