CINCINNATI (WXIX) -  The Clermont County Sheriff’s Office says deputies arrested 21‑year‑old Nicholas Scott on Dec. 26 and charged him with multiple counts, including endangering children and dissemination of sexual images, one count of sexual extortion and one count of use of a minor in nudity‑oriented material. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force forwarded a cybertip to the sheriff’s office on Oct. 31 about alleged online exploitation on Snapchat, the release said. Detectives identified the victim as a Missouri juvenile who believed they were chatting with a woman and sent nude images to the account, the release said. Deputies allege Scott then demanded additional images and videos and threatened to distribute them to the juvenile’s friends and family if the demands were not met. The sheriff’s office says investigators found Scott used photos and videos of an adult Colorado woman to pose as her online and solicit explicit material and money from multiple people. Court records do not specify which charges, if any, relate to the Snapchat incident involving the Missouri juvenile and which relate to the alleged use of the Colorado woman’s images. The investigation began following a missing child report in Somerset County. Troopers were alerted on Dec. 18 when the girl was reported missing from a home in Summit Township. Authorities determined that the girl had been picked up overnight by a 34-year-old man she had connected with through Snapchat. They say she was later found at the man's residence in Derry Township, where she reported being sexually assaulted. State police identified the suspect as Eric Ferrenberg, who has been taken into custody. Ferrenberg is currently being held in the Westmoreland County Prison on charges related to statutory sexual assault and corruption of minors.

Extensive social media engagement is viewed as potentially damaging to mental health, although its use is widespread and growing. Experts say that scrolling through social media feeds risks replacing real-world experiences, which are more likely to be protective of mental well-being. For young adults, cutting back on social media for a week resulted in a significant reduction in anxiety, depression, and insomnia in a new study published in JAMA Network Open . Participants in the study reported 16% fewer anxiety symptoms, 24.8% fewer symptoms of depression, and 14.5% less insomnia. The study involved 373 individuals ages 18 to 24, each of whom was paid $150 to participate. Of the cohort, 277 were female, 73 were male, 12 were non-binary, 9 were transgender, and 2 were listed as ‘Other’.
