According to a criminal complaint, Thomas Shannon, 43, was charged after a therapist reported that a 16-year-old had been sexually exploited on Snapchat. Investigators identified Shannon as a suspect using Snapchat and Cash App records.  Federal prosecutors allege that Shannon hired a private forensic examiner to review his cellphone to prove that he did not have child pornography. The forensic examiner, however, found child pornography on the phone, prosecutors say, and turned the phone over to police.  While investigators were reviewing Shannon's phone and Snapchat record, they found additional underage victims, including one who is 12 years old.  Another minor also came forward and said she met Shannon online and that he allegedly asked her to video chat with him while he engaged in sexually explicit conduct.  Shannon was arrested in Frankfort, Michigan, and is charged with attempted receipt of child pornography, receipt of child pornography, possession

(Philip Gawel/WWMT) GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) – An orthodontist from Grandville was arrested in Frankfort on charges related to child exploitation, according to U.S. Attorney Timothy VerHey. Thomas Shannon, 43, is an orthodontist who previously had a practice in Grandville. Shannon now faces multiple charges following an investigation into allegations of sexual exploitation of minors on Snapchat, according to Attorney VerHey. The criminal complaint alleges that a therapist reported a 16-year-old minor had been sexually exploited on Snapchat. Investigators identified Shannon as the perpetrator using Snapchat and CashApp records. Shannon hired a private forensic examiner to review his phone to prove his innocence, but the examiner discovered child pornography and turned it over to police, according to Attorney VerHey. Further investigation of Shannon's phone and Snapchat records revealed additional minor victims, including one who was only 12 years old, according to investigators. More than 1,700 school districts across the country have joined the lawsuit. The mass-action lawsuit was filed in federal court in California. It names Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube as defendents. MARTIN COUNTY — All three Treasure Coast school districts are now part of a mass-action lawsuit against social media giants such as Facebook, Snapchat and TikTok. The School Board agreed unanimously at its Aug. 19 meeting to join a national mass-action suit against the social media companies. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in California, names the parent companies of Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube as defendants. It claims the social media companies used algorithms and addictive mechanisms targeting children. More than 1,700 school districts in the country have joined the lawsuit, including 45 in Florida, reports said. Indian River and St. Lucie school districts previously agreed to join. Jackson, 27, of Algonquin, was charged with child pornography, grooming and four counts of distributing explicit material to a minor. A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges Jackson was found in possession of a video containing child sexual abuse material. The complaint said the video depicted two young children, ages 10-13, engaged in sexual conduct. The video was found on Jackson’s Snapchat account, the complaint said. The complaint said Jackson used Snapchat, an online social media app, to attempt to solicit or lure a 15-year-old child to engage in sexual conduct at Jackson’s home in the 600 block of Brookside Avenue in Algonquin. Jackson also allegedly sent an explicit photo and videos of himself to three other children through Snapchat. The complaint said the videos sent by Jackson were of him exposing himself and performing a lewd act on himself.
