On Aug. 8, James “Jake” Harrison Newcomer, 28, pleaded guilty to travel with intent to engage in sexual acts with a minor and two counts of attempted enticement of a minor. According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), Newcomer was on state supervision following his 30-month prison sentence for two counts of rape of a child when, in January 2024, he cut off his electronic monitoring device and proceeded to meet with various minor girls, including a minor in Auburn. Through a U.K. TV show, Snap creates use case for AR – Tubefilter

Snap wants to sell consumers on the entertainment value of augmented reality (AR) experiences, so it’s teaming up with a U.K.-based broadcaster to look back at some of the earth’s long-lost monuments. Seven Wonders of the Ancient World , a self-explanatory docuseries on Channel 5, includes interactive elements powered by the parent company of Snapchat. In a Newsroom post, Snap explained how its contribution to Seven Wonders of the Ancient World functions. “By simply scanning an on-screen QR code with their phones, viewers will be able to virtually travel to moments in time to explore, learn, and see these sites,” reads the post. “From traveling to Egypt’s Old Kingdom to check out the Giza Pyramids to seeing the beautiful Hanging Gardens of Babylon — people will be able to explore these awe-inspiring sites in Augmented Reality.” The concept of a “second screen” adjacent to TV viewership is nothing new, especially in the context of social media platforms, but the idea has recently been reexamined. Kids, for example, have been identified as regular users of second screens, inviting media companies like Netflix to cater programming to a half-checked-in audience. Snapchat, WPP Media and Lumen Unveil ‘Attention Advantage’ research, Redefining the …

Mike Follett, CEO, Lumen Research, “Our technology makes the invisible, visible. This study provides definitive, large-scale proof of what we've championed globally, genuine human attention is the single most powerful predictor of business outcomes. The finding that attention is 8X more effective than View-Through Rate at predicting brand recall isn't just a statistic, it validates that the entire media ecosystem must change2. To lead that change, our research identifies the winning formulas on platforms like Snapchat, where the immersive nature of the experience drives attention levels that are twice as high as on traditional platforms2. The pinnacle of this is Augmented Reality, where formats like Lenses create such a compelling, voluntary experience that they are over twice as effective at capturing meaningful attention2.” Amin Lakhani, President, Client Solutions, WPP Media South Asia, "Our clients demand accountability and a clear return on their investments. The 'Attention Advantage' provides exactly that. By moving beyond legacy metrics and focusing on genuine attention, we can now build more effective and efficient media plans based on what we know engages and delivers value to consumers as well as advertisers. We are proud to have partnered with Lumen and Snapchat on this research, and our role

Adam Mosseri says ‘people are confused’ about how the Instagram map works – Engadget

Yesterday, Meta introduced a new map feature that's almost identical to Snapchat's Snap Map. The feature has quickly sparked a backlash, though, and not just because it's yet another example of Instagram ripping off a Snapchat feature. While the map requires users to opt-in to share their location, many users were surprised and alarmed to see that their Instagram map was already populated with the locations of some accounts when it launched. That's because the map automatically pulls in location info when someone has recently shared a Story or Reel with a location tagged. For example, I posted a Story that tagged San Francisco's botanical gardens and it tagged me there on Instagram's map even though I have my map location set to share with "no one." This isn't that different from how Instagram has worked in the past: location tags have always been visible to your followers, and the app has always had a map view that let people see public posts that have been tagged with specific places. My story post tagged me on Instagram's map even though location is set to "no one" because I tagged a location (in this case San Francisco's botanical gardens). (Instagram screenshot)
