The Pine Hearts is an Olympia-based Americana group that recently released their album "Lost Love Songs" on Friday, Feb. 18.Seattle Refined: How long have you been writing/performing together?The Pine Hearts: About four or five years. We were playing for a year or two before that but didn't really have a band name. It was something like Joey and Derek, with Dean on bass. Eventually, we decided The Pine Hearts had a better ring to it.Tell us about the artistic process and the different stages that work into it. I find that writing is a bit like getting in a river. If you stand on the shore, you might catch a few drops, but eventually, you have to jump in and sit there for a while to feel the flow. Tumblr and New York City’s Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) have settled discrimination allegations related to the company’s 2018 adult content ban, which city regulators say disproportionately affected LGBTQ users. The settlement requires Tumblr to revise its user appeals process and train its human moderators on diversity and inclusion issues, as well as review thousands of old cases and hire an expert to look for potential bias in its moderation algorithms. The settlement, which did not involve a formal legal complaint and was signed last month, marks one of the first times that regulators have reached an agreement to change a social network’s moderation policies based on algorithmic bias issues. It resolves an investigation that the CCHR began in December 2018, shortly after Tumblr banned explicit sexual content and nudity — and enforced its rules with a comically inaccurate automated takedown system. In an interview with The Verge, CCHR press secretary Alicia McCauley says the agency became interested after reports that the ban would have an outsized effect on Tumblr’s LGBTQ user base. By a 71-61 vote, the House passed HF2900, as amended, Thursday. It would appropriate $1 billion for such payments. “This bill has been two hard years in the making,” Rep. Cedrick Frazier (DFL-New Hope), said in a statement. He sponsors the bill. “It has passed through six committees in less than a month, had many dedicated frontline workers drop everything to testify in support, and we’ve answered hundreds of questions from our colleagues. Now it’s passed off of the House floor. Our workers in Minnesota need to see action from Senate leaders on this bill now. We need to show that our Minnesota legislature puts people over profits.” The bill’s next stop is the Senate where Sen. Erin Murphy (DFL-St. Paul) is the sponsor. For first-generation students, it’s about changing direction. According to the first-generation student support welcome site, first-generation students are defined as students who “come from families where neither of their parents completed a bachelor’s degree and/or students who identify as having minimal prior exposure to, or knowledge of, the university experience.” According to David McCall, an assistant professor within the Retention and Student Success Deans office, first-generation students come to school with a lot of excitement and anxiety due to their lack of previous experience with higher education. “They are the generation of trailblazers,” McCall said. “They are trying to make a change and a difference, not just for themselves but for their families. She, other veterans and advocates are pushing for federal legislation to ensure veterans are taken care of. They say they need help paying for medical care caused by exposure to toxic burn pits and said it’s a matter of life and death. “I know from experience,” Burch said, “because I tried to take my life in 2013 because I couldn’t handle it.” Jon Stewart, long an advocate for veterans, said the VA forces vets to fight for treatment and that burden is contributing to high suicide rates. “They’re suffering from these health effects and made to feel like they’re fraudulent, crazy, lazy,” Stewart said Tuesday. Congressman Mark Takano, D-California, said his “Honoring Our Pact Act” would remove that burden and “will concede exposure to burn pits and airborne hazards and create presumptions for 23 respiratory illnesses…

The students named 2022 National Merit Semifinalists from West Hartford’s Hall High School have all become National Merit Scholar Finalists. Hall High School who were named National Merit Semifinalists have advanced to become National Merit Finalists. They are Andrew Chang, Samuel Foxman, David Gardner, Emma Kingwell, Eashwar Krishna, Sophie Kudler, and Charles Wang. About 90% of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test – a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year – and by meeting published program entry and participation requirements. There is no offseason in the NFL, especially with the 49ers. Whether it’s questions about if an all-time great should be brought in, how the team will re-sign top free agents, or deal with players returning from injury there’s always something to talk about. For starters, why would Tampa Bay be willing to send Brady to San Francisco? The 49ers and Buccaneers both play in the NFC.
