Microsoft May Acquire Discord for $10 Billion

Discord, the popular community chatting platform, may soon be seeing a massive deal. The big tech company Microsoft is reportedly in talks to purchase the platform for $10 billion. Details of the conversation are still scarce but this Microsoft Discord acquisition would become part of Microsoft’s ever-expanding reach. Motivation to PurchaseDiscord got its start in 2015, and since then, it’s become wildly popular for communities and friends. Discord is a chatting, video calling and livestreaming platform for gaming. However, people use the servers for countless other interests like music and movies, too. As a user, you get texting, calling and livestreaming for free, but you can also upgrade to the Nitro plan for even more features for chatting. It’s clear that such a connected platform has seen drastic growth during the pandemic when people must stay apart. Through this community-centric approach, Discord has drawn in over 100 million active monthly users across 6.7 million active servers. Thus, this success put Discord in the spotlight, with Microsoft now moving in as a potential buyer. If the two companies reach a deal, it would likely come out to $10 billion after Discord reached a valuation of $7 billion at the end of 2020. Its drastic growth…

Begotten, Tumblr and Gore: 30 Years Later, Merhige's Movie Remains One of the Most Disturbing …

Apologies in advance for eliciting an image that is best relegated to a collective amnesia, but who remembers the map of Tumblr? A crude drawing of a series of connecting islands, its borders are largely designated by fandom or cultural affiliation. Regions labeled in Comic Sans vary wildly from “Cats” and “Nutella” to Harry Potter and Doctor Who, with only a small sliver of “Fandom Island” relegated to “Other.” When recently asked by a former fandom blogger which territory I had occupied in this fictional landscape, I winced. “I, uh, actually ran a gore blog, so I guess ‘Other,’” I admitted to the woman who had once undoubtedly found herself marooned on the coast of “Shipper Lake.” Long before Tumblr went through a mass purification, the blogging platform was an effective outlet for teens to examine the seedy underbelly of culture with a guise of relative anonymity. Hardcore porn, violent imagery and grisly details from cold cases were reblogged on a continuous cycle, with fringe bloggers often scouring the internet for shocking images to proliferate the stream of content. When resources seemed to be exhausted where real-life crime and autopsy photos were concerned, it became a morbid pastime to scour…

Is it from Tumblr? Delivery driver clicks photo of the box for confirmation, perfect photo wins the …

Twitter user shares photo clicked by delivery boy. &nbsp | &nbspPhoto Credit:&nbspTwitter The internet is always quick to appreciate real beauty and appreciate the skills involved in making it look that way. Even when the person is not a professional, his work is lauded all the more.  An example of this is a photo that has been shared on Twitter by a user named 'rs'. She shared a photograph clicked by a delivery person. It shows a package kept next to the door. With the light and shadow falling on it, the picture looks absolutely breathtaking and looks like a professional clicked it.  This is a procedure many follow to confirm the delivery of an item. Normally, they are not clicked with so much expertise.  However, the photo that has gone viral was taken expertly.  Check it out.  (Image Credits: Twitter) "My delivery dude sent me the most beautiful photograph of the Chinese food I ordered," the user wrote.  For obvious reasons, the photo went viral on the microblogging site. Till now, it garnered 16,500 retweets with 2,68,500 likes.  In fact, the user shared the screenshot of her message to the delivery person, lauding him for his skills and thanking…

From What Lab Did 'Cancel Culture' Leak?

In its wisdom, the Biden White House apparently has decided it is now permissible to speculate COVID-19 might have been deliberately leaked by the Chinese government from a lab intended for developing biological weapons. Even the Ministry of Truth that is Facebook has ceased censoring posts making this case, now that the Biden White House has realized the story can no longer be swept under the rug.  So much the better. Any victory against the criminalization of noticing things is worth celebrating.  While we may be closer to understanding where the most dangerous recent physical pathogen originated, however, we are not so lucky when it comes to the most dangerous recent intellectual pathogen. I refer to wokeness, and its most infamous applied practice, cancel culture.  When it comes to this particular virus, the Right has been far more confused than they were about COVID-19, and the opposition to wokeness/cancel culture/social justice/whatever you want to call it has suffered for it. Much of our analysis of cancel culture has fixated on its intellectual roots: say, in faculty lounges during the 1970s’ “deconstruction” boom.  There is merit to this understanding. Just because the ideas percolated there, however, it does not follow that…

The Archive of Our Own lyric trend brings a Tumblr meme to Twitter

By Morgan Sung2021-06-04 20:21:06 UTC A viral tweet is bringing the fanfiction community together under the lyrical genius of Christina Perri's "A Thousand Years," and it's bringing a long-running Tumblr meme format to Twitter.  The song was written for the 2011 masterpiece The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1 but, thanks to the enduring enthusiasm of the Twilight fandom, it resides in the hallowed halls of evergreen meme material.  Emma Logsdon, a Twitter user and fanfiction enthusiast, brought "A Thousand Years" back into the spotlight with a viral lyric video that used titles on the fanfiction platform Archive of Our Own for each lyric. The video, which they posted Thursday night, has more than 460,000 views and inspired other Twitter users to start using the meme format as well.  Fanfiction writers are notorious for either not being able to think of titles or hating the titles that they do come up with, Logdson noted in a Twitter DM, so many resort to using tangentially related song lyrics.  Although Logdson is one of the first people to use Archive of Our Own titles for lyric videos on Twitter, this format has existed on Tumblr since at least 2019. Logsdon was…

For Japanese Breakfast, the summer of 2021 will “Be Sweet.” Japanese Breakfast – Michelle Zauner’s Tumblr-inspired stage moniker – has made a name for herself in more ways than one. As an indie rock musician releasing her third album “Jubilee” on Friday and a writer who recently released her memoir “Crying in H Mart.” Zauner said she has made peace with her past and found some joy along the way. The Daily Bruin’s Alex Driscoll spoke with Zauner to discuss her new songs on “Jubilee,” preservation of her mother through “Crying in H Mart” and the direction of her future musical creations. (Courtesy of Peter Ash Lee) Daily Bruin: Can you describe your transition from your last album “Soft Sounds from Another Planet” to “Jubilee”? How does this next album differ thematically or sonically from your last? Michelle Zauner: I wanted to write an album centered around joy as the major theme. It just seemed like the most unexpected, surprising thing for me to do as an artist whose narrative is so rooted in grief and also whose genre is really rooted in sadness in general. I…
