Posted By: Larry Felton Johnson January 3, 2026 By Mark Woolsey Cobb County firefighters quickly extinguished a blaze they say was caused by spent fireworks early on New Year’s Day. Fire Lt. Stephen Bennett says a neighbor called 9-1-1 to report the blaze on Silver Leaf Drive at roughly 5 a.m. Thursday. Bennett says arriving crews found the blaze had spread up the roof line and was heading toward the home’s chimney. After they extinguished the exterior blaze, crews went inside and found some hot spots and damage near the chimney. “The homeowner stated they had been shooting fireworks during the night and placed the spent ones in a garbage can, and the garbage can is where the fire started,” Bennett told the Courier. No injuries were reported.

In a settlement agreement filed in Massachusetts federal court Monday, the National Institutes of Health and a group of Democratic attorneys general who’d challenged the new criteria for grant funding said the NIH would consider grant applications made up to Sept. 29, 2025, without judging the efforts related to diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, or vaccines. The settlement provides an uncontested path for the agency while courts decide whether the administration can use its controversial analysis. The administration did not agree to permanently ditch its campaign to evaluate health research funding decisions based on schools’ DEI programs. NIH officials “will complete their consideration of the Applications in the ordinary course of NIH’s scientific review process, without applying the Challenged Directives,” the settlement said, adding that the agency would “evaluate each application individually and in good faith.” The settlement was signed by U.S. Department of Justice lawyers and the attorneys general of Massachusetts, California, Maryland, Washington, Arizona

Tannehill will play in next year’s US Army All-American All-Star Football Game in Dallas. The 2025 All-Star game was played on Sunday, Dec 21. The US Army All-American Bowl began in 2000 with 80 of the top high school football players from across the country. Each year, 80 football players are selected based on their ability and integrity. Of those who played each year over the past 25 years, about 40% ended up in the NFL. The All-American Bowl includes a week of preparation in Frisco, Texas, the home of the Dallas Cowboys. Selected players will work out and prepare for the game with 80 of the top players in the nation. They will work with seasoned coaches and exceptional players from all over the country.
