Standup is like therapy… when you think about it. In both cases, a person exposes their innermost thoughts. People are given license to be brutally honest, saying things about their loved ones that they probably wouldn’t admit to their faces. Of course, if a therapist laughed at your emotional turmoil, you’d likely ask for a refund. If an audience laughs, you feel strangely gratified. Laughter tells a comedian that the audience has been there too, letting them know they aren’t alone. That said, what happens in therapy stays in that room. When you say something onstage, your thoughts are out in the open. Will Arnett has been one of our best comedic actors for over twenty years, going back to his work on Arrested Development. Anyone who’s seen BoJack Horseman knows that Arnett is also underappreciated as a dramatic actor. No joke, Arnett demonstrated some of the century’s rawest acting chops as a cartoon horse, the episode with BoJack’s eulogy to his mother being a dramatic highlight. Much like how that episode provided an extended monologue for Arnett, Is This Thing On? largely relies on his ability to hold an audience’s attention. Michael Huppe Elliott O'Donovan Trending on Billboard SoundExchange’s CEO, Michael Huppe, has been working towards getting artists paid on terrestrial AM/FM radio stations for the last decade, but he says the effort to get this royalty in the U.S. dates back “much longer,” he explains. “There’s a letter that was issued by Frank Sinatra — I don’t remember exactly when, but I think it was about 30 years ago — to Bruce Springsteen .” Related SoundExchange has collected royalties for artists on digital and satellite radio sources like SiriusXM and Pandora since its formation in the 1990s. However, for terrestrial radio, artists are not required to receive the same compensation — or any at all. Only songwriters do. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos extended an olive branch to theater owners on Monday after rival David Ellison and his mega billionaire father, Larry Ellison, launched a $108.4 billion hostile bid that could derail the streamer’s $82.7 billion deal to buy Warner Bros., home of one of the few remaining iconic Hollywood movie studios. Speaking at an investor’s conference Monday in New York City, Sarandos made it clear that Warner Bros. will remain in the business of releasing movies theatrically (conversely, original films made for Netflix will stick to their gameplan). “We have not talked a lot about in the past about wanting to do theatrical, because we’ve never been in that business. When this deal closes, we be will in, and we’re going to do it,” said Sarandos, indicating that all of the studio’s box office this year, including A Minecraft Movie, Weapons and Sinners, wouldn’t have driven the same value without a proper release, with the implication being a robust marketing spend, something Netflix is loathe to do for its fare. “We didn’t buy this company to destroy that value,” he concluded.
