Americans are unprepared for the expensive and complex process of aging – Cobb Courier

by Kahli Zietlow, University of Michigan, Hollywood legend Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their home in February 2025. Hackman had been living with Alzheimer’s and depended on Arakawa as his full-time caregiver. Disturbingly, postmortem data suggests that Arakawa died of complications from pulmonary Hantavirus several days before her husband passed. The discordant times of death point to a grim scenario: Hackman was left alone and helpless, trapped in his home after his wife’s death. The couple’s story, while shocking, is not unique. It serves as a warning for our rapidly aging society. The U.S. population is aging, but most Americans are not adequately planning to meet the needs of older adulthood. As a geriatric physician and medical educator, I care for older adults in both inpatient and outpatient settings. My research and clinical work focus on dementia and surrogate decision-making. In my experience, regardless of race, education or socioeconomic status, there are some universal challenges that all people face with aging and there are steps everyone can take to prepare. Aging is inevitable but unpredictable Aging is an unpredictable, highly individualized process that varies

Tumblr Introduces Optional SSL Encryption – Tech Geek

SSL Now Available on Tumblr Security is not optional in today’s world of cyber threats, which are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Social media platforms and websites are constantly working to improve security protocols in order to protect their users from malicious activities, hackers, and data breaches. Tumblr, following the lead of social media giants such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, has officially upped its security game. Tumblr introduced SSL encryption in a recent update. This offers users an additional layer of security while browsing or interacting on the platform. This new feature, however, is not enabled by default. Users must manually activate it in the account settings. Anyone using Tumblr today must understand what this feature is, why it’s important, and how it will affect their experience. This blog will explain the benefits of Tumblr’s optional SSL encryption. We’ll also discuss compatibility issues, such as XKit plugins, and give you tips on how to enjoy Tumblr safely. Wicked: For Good Review | Flickreel

When Wicked finally hit the big screen last year, the consensus was that Jon M. Chu nailed it, but he’d have his work cut out for him with Part 2, Wicked: For Good. Although most would agree that Act 1 of the long-running stage musical is superior to Act 2, I never thought the second half was bad. It features some of the story’s best songs, including As Long as You’re Mine and No Good Deed. While Defying Gravity might’ve been the showstopper, For Good is the emotional climax that always triggers the waterworks. Act 2 has multiple tear-jerking moments, as well as a few sure to receive applause. The same can be said about this screen adaptation, which has all of its stage counterpart’s pros. That said, the issues with Act 2 haven’t been erased from Wicked: For Good. Some elements are improved upon, such as one of the more dated moments involving Nessa (Marissa Bode). Yet, other characters, like Ethan Slater’s Boq, still fall by the wayside in the end. A lot happens in a relatively short amount of time, with some key moments happening off-screen. That’s probably the biggest hurdle to overcome. The first film had breathing

Rental Family Review | Flickreel

“Crowd-pleaser” used to be a term of endearment. Now, it’s one that every cinema snob on Film Twitter views as a red flag. Rental Family is the very definition of a crowd-pleaser that’s likely to resonate with anyone looking to be put in an uplifting mood. That’s why most of us go to the movies, right? Sure, but there are plenty of cynics who will sit down with arms crossed and one eyebrow raised. While I walk a tightrope between optimism and pessimism, Rental Family caught me on a good day. The film is an undeniable charmer from director Hikari, who previously worked on the miniseries Beef. Ironically, that’s are far away from crowd-pleasing as you can get. Brendan Fraser has come back in a big way since winning Best Actor for The Whale. There was a period, though, where many questioned if he’d ever rebound from multiple career setbacks. You get the sense that Fraser draws from a personal place in Rental Family, where he plays struggling actor Phillip. A tall American living in a cramped Japanese apartment, Phillip’s most prominent role was for a toothpaste commercial. That was several years ago. With fewer acting gigs coming his way

Brendan Carr Reposts Trump’s Comments Calling for ‘Late Night’ Host Seth Meyers to Be Fired

Could FFC chair Brendan Carr have his eyes set on his next late-night target? Nearly two months after ABC temporarily suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! over a comment host Jimmy Kimmel made during his Sept. 15 episode drew heat online, including from Carr, it appears he’s now keeping an eye on Seth Meyers. On Saturday, Carr reposted one of President Donald Trump‘s Truth Social posts, calling for Meyers, the host of NBC’s Late Night, to be fired. “NBC’s Seth Meyers is suffering from an incurable case of Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS). He was viewed last night in an uncontrollable rage, likely due to the fact that his “show” is a Ratings DISASTER. Aside from everything else, Meyers has no talent, and NBC should fire him, IMMEDIATELY!” Trump wrote. Carr didn’t add any additional comments to his repost on X, but the following day, he shared that he was visiting the president over the weekend. “Great to be with President Trump this weekend. President Trump’s policies are unleashing a new wave of growth and innovation in communities across the country,” the FCC chair wrote in another post on X, alongside a photo of him and Trump standing together. The Hollywood Reporter has reached

Atlanta Braves Do Know How To Build For The Future – Cobb Courier

By John A. Tures, Professor of Political Science, LaGrange College Every Spring, I write a column after reading the Major League Baseball assessment of a team’s farm system. Other columnists with sports publication usually rank the Atlanta Braves dead last, or close to the bottom of the barrell. And yet every year, the “Cream of Cobb County” seems to rise to the top, as Atlanta’s baseball team produces either a Rookie of the Year winner, or a top-three candidate. Perhaps after Catcher Drake Baldwin’s award, the critics will give the Braves a second look. In the book/movie “Moneyball,” Billy Beane and his baseball staff build winners for the low-budget team, the Oakland Athletics. Beane and his associates go beyond what the scouts are focusing on, which is looks and myths. For example, these traditionalists get into a player’s muscles and physique as marks of “future success.” Another claims to focus on a player’s wife. If she’s hot, it shows the player has confidence, and so he should be signed, or so the myth goes. By the way, a college football coach said that what he learned from “Moneyball” was to hire assistants with hot wives, because it showed they had

Russia Escalates Pressure on Ukraine by Attacking Kyiv – SpecialEurasia

Executive Summary Russia is tightening its pressure on Ukraine. The Kremlin’s military is still advancing in the east, moving through destroyed cities and placing a strain on Ukrainian defences. Simultaneously, Moscow is increasing its strikes against the Ukrainian capital. The overnight attack on Kyiv, involving over 400 drones, caused several civilian deaths and widespread damage to residential districts. This action shows Moscow’s intention to increase the cost of resistance and communicates to European governments and the United States that Russia does not intend to retreat. The Kremlin is utilising military force, political pressure, and intimidation to compel Ukraine and its partners to adopt positions that favour Russian interests. Key Findings Russia is tightening military and political pressure through renewed eastern advances and a large-scale strike on Kyiv. Moscow is acquiring opportunities to undermine the Ukrainian government by exploiting military attacks and internal pressures, such as accusations of corruption and a lack of available personnel. Western hesitation, paired with sustained Russian operations, is reinforcing the Kremlin’s belief that it can continue the war on its own terms. Current Situation On November 14, 2025, Russian forces struck Kyiv during the night with extensive use of drones and missiles. Ukrainian authorities have reported
