Without Billy Joel, MSG Entertainment’s Fiscal Year Profit Falls 74% – Billboard

The Garden owner said concerts at its namesake arena declined year over year, in part because the Piano Man ended his once-a-month shows. Billy Joel takes a bow at his 150th Madison Square Garden show on July 25, 2024 in New York City. Myrna M. Suarez/Getty Images Madison Square Garden Entertainment reported a 74% decline in profit for its full fiscal year on Wednesday (Aug. 13), as the company struggled with fewer concerts at its iconic New York venue, the Garden, and the end of Billy Joel‘s decade-long residency. MSG Entertainment’s reported net income, the profitability metric often called the bottom line, fell to $37.4 million for fiscal 2025 from $144.3 million in fiscal 2024, while total revenue declined 2% to $947.2 million. The company’s share price was down more than 10% at 2 p.m. ET. Related Although MSG reported holding more than 975 concerts, family shows and sports events for around 6 million ticketholders across its five venues in fiscal 2025, MSG Entertainment CFO David Collins said the end of Joel’s MSG residency on July 25, 2024 — which had him playing the Garden once a month beginning in January 2014 — contributed to the year-over-year decline in concerts

‘Helluva Boss’ Team Breaches Tumblr Containment With ‘Homestuck’ Animated Series

The most online of people likely remember Homestuck,  Andrew Hussie’s internet fiction series. After Hussie ended the webcomic in 2016, loyal fans have kept it alive with various side projects and Hussie’s occasional guidance. Now, it’s getting its biggest side project yet in the form of an animated series. Or rather, the pilot for one. This comes courtesy of  Hazbin Hotel creator Vivienne Medrano and her animation company Spindlehorse, and with some well-known voice talent attached. Video game and anime voice actors Cherami Leigh (Cyberpunk 2077), Adam McArthur (Jujutsu Kaisen), and Brandon Winkler are onboard, ditto Tails’ longtime actor Colleen O’Shaughnessey, voice director Richard Horvitz (who already does voice work for Spindlehorse’s Helluva Boss), and Undertale creator Toby Fox. Before he made Undertale and Deltarune, Fox made his name doing music for Homestuck’s animated sections back in the day. Check them and the pilot out below. For those not in the know, Hussie launched Homestuck in 2009 as one of several series he made developed in MS Paint. Plot-wise, it focuses on John Egbert (Fox), a kid who gets a beta copy of a computer game called Sburb for his 13th birthday present. When he learns it lets him manipulate reality, John enlists his friends Rose (Leigh), Dave (McArthur), and Jade (O’Shaughnessey)

YNW Melly Murder Trial Postponed Again — Until 2027 – Billboard

The rapper has already been in jail for more than six years over accusations that he murdered two YNW associates after a recording studio session. Alie Skowronski/Miami Herald/TNS/Getty Images YNW Melly’s double murder trial has been postponed yet again, this time until January 2027 — nearly eight years after he was first arrested. Melly has sat in jail for years awaiting trial on first-degree murder charges over accusations that he and another YNW rapper shot and killed Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams and Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas Jr. in 2018. Now, the wait will go on even longer. A trial had been set to kick off Sept. 10, but on Friday (Aug. 8), Judge Martin S. Fein postponed it until January 2027, prosecutors confirmed to Billboard. That will be almost eight years after Melly was arrested in February 2019. Related The delay was sparked by ongoing appeals lodged by both sides over what evidence will be admitted in the trial. Last week, an appeals court granted a

Podcast Listening Is Up Among Young People. That’s Bad News for Radio – Billboard

Among listeners aged 13 to 34, spoken word audio now accounts for as much listening time as AM/FM radio — a dramatic shift from a decade ago. Soft focus of modern microphone placed on wooden table in recording studio during podcast Getty Images Earlier this year, young Americans’ listening habits reached a tipping point that doesn’t bode well for legacy media companies.   In the second quarter, AM/FM and podcasts both had a 14% share of time spent listening to audio in the 18- to 29-year-old age group. But just 11 years ago, AM/FM radio had a seemingly insurmountable lead: In 2014, Edison Research found that AM/FM listening held a seven-to-one margin over podcast listening in the same age group.  Related Edison noticed a surge in young consumers’ audio listening last year. Among all age demos, the biggest increase in time spent listening to spoken word audio was seen among listeners aged 13 to 34, who devoted 23% of listening time to spoken word audio, up from 11% in 2014. That compared with smaller jumps among adults 55 and over, who dedicated 28% of time spent listening to spoken word audio in 2024, up slightly from 26% a decade earlier. For
