(March 1, 2021) — The University of Kentucky — along with its partner Gen.G — will continue its monthly esports speaker series, Cornerstone Commentary, with guest speaker Tom Kalinske, former CEO of Sega of America Inc. Kalinske will discuss his time with Mattel, the history of Sega vs. Nintendo and his work after the console wars of the 1990s. From 1972 to 1987, Tom Kalinske worked with Mattel reviving the Barbie and Hot Wheels Brands and launching Masters of the Universe. In 1990, Kalinske became the CEO of Sega of America Inc. His aggressive marketing decisions during his time at Sega, such as price drops, anti-Nintendo attack ads and the famous “Sega Scream” TV campaign, are often cited as key elements in the success of the Genesis video game console.  After his time with Sega, Kalinske served as the CEO and chairman of the largest educational toy company in the world, Leapfrog. Currently, Kalinske is the executive chairman of Global Education Learning, a company dedicated to children’s education in China. Being internet famous, like Minecraft streamer and YouTuber TommyInnit, it might be easy to forget that millions of people in the real world would recognize you in the street. The Pokemon Trading Card Game Twitch category has risen in popularity by over 3000 percent as Pokemon celebrates its 25th anniversary. As February marks Pokemon's 25th anniversary, and with the recent McDonald's Happy Meal tie-in, there has been a clear increase in the franchise's already popular presence.  In fact, Twitch metrics show the Pokemon trading card category has seen an increase of over 3000% in monthly viewership. Twitch is home to some of the most popular video game streamers around the world, and is largely considered the go-to place for fans and streamers alike to watch and discuss their favorite games. In previous years, card games were not a very popular category on the platform, but the Pokemon Trading Card Game is quickly changing that. The Pokemon TCG's 3000%+ viewership increase on Twitch occurred from March 2020 to January 2021, and is now the second most popular Pokemon category on the platform, behind Pokemon Sword and Shield. The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has linked up with Twitch as part of a new multi-year collaboration, launching later in spring this year. The Amazon-owned streaming service will show around 600 hours of live basketball action each year to the Switzerland-based federation’s Twitch channel, along with other ‘unique programming formats’.  In addition, FIBA will grant fans of the sport access to official footage to produce FIBA-related content for their own platforms, as part of the organisation’s wider strategy to establish a network of creators in each of its major markets across the globe – Australia, France, Italy, Spain and the US – who will co-stream live games.
