SoundCloud's Direct Artist Payments Moves it Closer to Competing with Bandcamp

Photo Credit: Rachit TankSoundCloud is reportedly moving to direct artist payments from fans as its revenue model. It moves the service in close competition with Bandcamp.Currently, SoundCloud uses the ‘pro-rata’ model that is common for most music streaming services. All revenue is pooled and then partitioned out according to who earned the most streams in a given period. That method favors big earners who pull in millions of streams a month.SoundCloud Go+ is a $10/monthly subscription, but again, users don’t decide who to support. There’s also been no way to allow artists to receive tips on SoundCloud. But as British lawmakers are looking at regulating how much music streaming royalties should pay, SoundCloud is changing up its model.Billboard reports that SoundCloud is experimenting with allowing fans to pay artists directly. That would put SoundCloud in much closer competition with Bandcamp, where most indie artists get their start. The change in its streaming payout model is the first big move of SoundCloud’s new CEO, Michael Weissman. The lack of touring throughout 2020 and into 2021 has hurt independent artists immeasurably. Another streaming service with direct artist payments would help alleviate that. SoundCloud stepped up during the pandemic to partner with Twitch to…

LoL Streamer IWillDominate Allowed By Riot Games To Resume Co-Streams

Banned League of Legends streamer IWillDominate has been allowed after seven months to resume co-streaming the League Championship Series by Riot. League of Legends streamer Christian Rivera, better known on Twitch as IWillDominate, will be permitted by Riot Games to co-stream the League Championship Series (LCS) again, after having been removed from the League Partnership Program back in July. Rivera has been appealing the decision since it came down the pipeline, and it looks as if his efforts have paid off. Rivera was once known as one of the most prolific content creators in the LoL community, particularly on Twitch, but he was not without controversy. He had been flagged by Riot for previous behavior and was on probation by the time of his expulsion. Riot explained in the email sent to Rivera detailing his removal that posts he'd made on social media accounts were against Riot's policies meant to foster an inclusive environment. But Riot, on the other hand, has been embroiled in its own fair share of controversy, particularly concerning the now-aborted LEC deal with NEOM, a city project in Saudi Arabia, a country with a blatantly wretched history of abuse against the LGBTQ+ community and women, and its current ongoing…

A Pandemic Conversation with Space Yacht

Space Yacht founders Henry Lu and Rami Perlman talk about their new label, Tech My House, Vol. 1, taking risks, and so much more. Southern California staple Space Yacht is a trailblazer in the growing dance music community. Since its inception, founders Henry Lu and Rami (LondonBridge) Perlman continue to invest their all in the brand. What started out as a weekly party turned into innovation over the last six years and they clearly don’t have their sights on slowing down anytime soon. Just like everyone else in the world, the pandemic flipped the switch on all their plans for 2020, but that didn’t stop Lu and Perlman from making magic. To keep Space Yacht connected with the community, they turned their attention to the internet. Platforms like Twitch provided a new space for them to try new things that included their Tune Reactor show, which led to the launch of their label as well. Back in January, Space Yacht hit a major milestone with their new label, releasing their first compilation, Tech My House Vol 1, which featured a number of artists selected through Tune Reactor. The compilation is a masterpiece that represents the brand at its core values – to…

Twitch Streamer xQc Mocks People for Holding On to GameStop Stock

The French-Canadian streamer xQC, who isn't afraid to say what's on his mind, has some thoughts about folks who held onto GameStop stock. The GameStop stock situation continues to change and evolve day-to-day, hour-to-hour. After reaching some extraordinary highs, GameStop's stock price fell dramatically this week. Today, the stock rallied, but it is still a volatile situation. The big push on GameStop stock was initiated by the subreddit r/wallstreetbets, but as it pulled more people in, knowing when to cash out or stop treating the market like a game became harder to figure out. As a result, Twitch streamer xQc took some shots at folks who held on too long. The controversial French-Canadian streamer isn't afraid to speak his mind. Instead of steering clear of hot button topics, like many streamers tend to do, xQc welcomes the opportunity to give his opinion on an issue. After fellow streamer C9 Ziqo was banned from Twitch, xQc had something to say. His outspokenness is part of his persona, and it seems to be something that draws his fans in. In his latest stream, xQc weighed in on the GameStop situation, saying that he told people to sell when the stock was riding…

'Twitch' alarming, baseless

Published February 05, 2021 3:03PM Letter Re: Govt invites backlash over wards move, February 3. On May 25, 2020 The Herald published a letter from a contributor with this opening paragraph: “The political collywobbles of regular columnist Clive Bibby are to be expected, but a reality check is sorely needed.” His alarming twitch at the words “wards” and “racism” linked to the Government's new policy to nullify existing unjust, unfair legislation in order to give tangata whenua an equal say in council matters is baseless scaremongering better suited to extremist right-wing conspiracy groups driving deep divisions in other countries. Why should this Government be concerned when they absolutely thrashed the opposition? In hindsight, the “Nats” have finally woken up to the fact they need to widen their voter base well beyond their habitual privileged, middle/upper-class Pakeha supporters. Standing in the Maori seats in 2023 is a wise move on their part towards recognising that the political landscape has changed dramatically. It is also gratifying to see Mr B's affirmation of and support for the emerging Maori economy, but incredulous to hear him say that affirmative action is no longer needed. Rubbish! If anything we need affirmative action and collaboration now…

Live at 9 p.m. PT/12 a.m. ET on Shacknews Twitch! Look, we all know Superman 64 is a terrible game, but I really didn't have that bad of a time with it last time on skankcore64! I only went out-of-bounds twice, jeopardizing the annoyingly long missions. I only had to restart the game a couple times due to bone-headed Controller Pak management. Really though, it wasn't all bad! It was fun to revisit my troubled teenage purchase live with all of you. However tonight, I'm backing out of the deal. I'm calling an audible. I have acquired and tested the long desired GoldenEye 007 remake from the Xbox Live Arcade service. The game so mired in…
