Twitch rule backfires, simp is now used more than ever before

Twitch / TwitchOlivia R. December 19, 2020Twitch doubled down on problematic language earlier this week, and the streaming community wasn't having it.  As part of the streaming platform's updated harassment policy, the use of "simp," "virgin," and "incel" were declared ban-worthy offenses when used as an insult. Twitch COO Sarah Clemens explained that the phrases were being banned since Twitch prohibits "derogatory statements" aimed at another person's sexual preferences and the negative use of "sexually-focused terms."  The Twitch community immediately revolted, forcing the streaming service to clear up its policy regarding the popular slang words.  "We do not have a blanket ban on the use of words like 'simp' in casual banter, but will take action when words like this (amongst others) are used to harass and harm community members," Twitch tweeted.  We wanted to clear up any misunderstandings about language that can be used on Twitch. At the core of it, we’re focused on doing what we can to protect our community from harassment. — Twitch (@Twitch) December 18, 2020 Twitch users revolt against ban on simp, incel It seems like Twitch's continued explanation of the ban on "simp" and other similar insults hasn't been enough to stop the…

Op-ed: Why esports is multi-billion-dollar opportunity for forward-thinking investors

G2 Esports fans during Quarter Finals League of Legends World Championship match between G2 Esports and Damwon Gaming on October 27, 2019 in Madrid, Spain. Borja B. Hojas | Getty Images For the uninitiated, think of esports like you would any other sport. Instead of baseball, hockey, chess or curling, it's video games like CSGO, League of Legends, Call of Duty or Fortnite. After all, a sport is just a set of rules, a field of play, and competitive infrastructure spanning players, teams, leagues, broadcasters and the viewing audience. Every game in esports has its own set of rules. Swap physical mastery for mental acuity. Replace stadiums and ballparks with virtual arenas and game modes, and everything else (infrastructure) is similar when you boil it down. Right down to those pulse-pounding moments when the home team clinches a one-in-a-million play to take home the title. So then, why are esports getting so much attention lately? For starters, events like League of Legends World Championships matched the Superbowl in terms of viewership, and young gamers in the 18- to 25-year-old age group watch 34% more esports than traditional sports. One big reason for this is esports, like its audience, is a…

Hunt: Showdown Blood and Ice Event Brings Legendary Gear, Twitch Drops, and More

Crytek fully reveals the Blood and Ice event for Hunt: Showdown, bringing holiday-themed gameplay, gear, and more to the team-oriented horror shooter. The new winter and holiday-themed event for Hunt: Showdown has arrived. The Blood and Ice event in Hunt: Showdown will allow players to unlock exclusive equipment and hunters thanks to in-game challenges and Twitch drops. In a similar manner to the Halloween event for Hunt: Showdown a couple of months ago, Blood and Ice sees players destroying items around the map to earn event points. Successfully blowing up a present, slicing down a Christmas tree, finding presents by killing bosses, and investigating holiday clues will give players event points, which are used to progressively unlock limited-time items. Players can also gain event points via Twitch drops. Every 30 minutes watched gives players another 10 event points. The limited-time gear includes a Legendary First Aid Kit named Cold Snap, a Hailstorm Mosin sniper rifle, a Winter Rose Vetterli, and some dusters that are very comically named Nutcracker. Perhaps the most exciting addition is a Scrooge looking skin that was teased for Hunt: Showdown recently. The official name for the new Legendary Hunter is The Skinflint, but it is very clear that…
