Read moreDetailsAustralia has expanded its under-16 social media ban to include Twitch, the popular live-streaming platform popular with teens, the country"s internet regulator said, Report informs via Anadolu. The eSafety commissioner said Twitch qualifies for the under-16 ban due to its core interactive features. "Twitch is a platform most commonly used for live streaming or posting content that enables users, including Australian children, to interact with others in relation to the content posted," the commissioner said in a statement. Starting Dec. 10, Reddit, Kick, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, Snapchat, Threads, and YouTube will face a "world-first legal obligation" to prevent anyone under 16 from opening or maintaining accounts. Australia"s social media law holds platforms responsible for enforcing age limits, with fines of up to $32 million for noncompliance, while users and parents face no penalties. Twitch, owned by Amazon, is among the most popular platforms for gaming, streaming, cooking, and political content. The platform announced that it will block Australians under 16 from creating accounts starting Dec. 10 and deactivate existing underage accounts on Jan. 9, while maintaining the global minimum age at 13.

It now joins Kick among those confirmed as “age-restricted platforms” and therefore subject to Australia’s Social Media Minimum Age legislation, which takes effect on 10 December 2025. According to the eSafety Commissioner’s announcement, a self-assessment from Twitch met the legislation’s criteria “because it has the sole or significant purpose of online social interaction”. It follows Meta’s recent warning to teens impacted by the social media ban, and Roblox‘s move to limit in-game chat to users within similar age groups. Although Roblox is not currently considered an age-restricted platform, it will require all Australian users who wish to use in-game communication features to undergo an age estimation check from December onwards. At this stage, “no further assessments” are planned by the eSafety Commissioner before 10 December.

This move by the Australian government is part of its ongoing efforts to address concerns about online safety, mental health and exposure to harmful content among young people. As per the Reuters report, the ban by the Australian government now covers Twitch, the popular live-streaming platform which is known for gaming and interactive broadcasts. On the other hand, Pinterest is now included in the list as regulators feel that its content posed less risk as compared to other platforms. These restrictions are part of Australia’s broader Online Safety Act, which has been under review amid rising concerns about the screen time in teens and also exposure to inappropriate material. Why Twitch was targeted As reported by Reuters, the Australian officials cited that the unfiltered nature of Twitch’s live is one of the key reasons which led to the ban of Twitch. The platform let users have realtime interactions which regulators feel can expose
