The ShinyHunters extortion gang stole personal information belonging to over 119,000 people after hacking the Vimeo online video platform in April, according to data breach notification service Have I Been Pwned. Vimeo is a video hosting and streaming platform publicly traded on the Nasdaq stock market, with over 300 million registered users and over 1,100 employees, and reported revenues of $417 million for FY2024. The company disclosed on April 27 that customer and user data had been accessed without authorization following a recent breach at Anodot, a data anomaly detection company. "Our initial findings suggest that the databases accessed primarily contain technical data, video titles and metadata, and, in some cases, customer email addresses," Vimeo said. However, the company said the attack didn't cause any disruptions and that the threat actors didn't gain access to affected individuals' credentials or financial information. Vimeo also disabled all Anodot credentials after detecting the breach and removed the Anodot integration with its systems to cut off the attackers' access. "The data accessed does not include Vimeo video content, valid user login credentials, or payment card information. Vimeo user and customer login credentials are secure. Cybersecurity company Trellix says a part of its source code repository was recently breached, but shared little other information about the incident.   Trellix said it has been working with forensic experts to investigate the intrusion, and law enforcement has been notified.  “Based on our investigation to date, we have found no evidence that our source code release or distribution process was affected, or that our source code has been exploited,” Trellix said in a statement.  The security firm has promised to share additional details after it completes its probe.  Until then, the industry is left to speculate on the exact window of intrusion, who was behind the attack, and which specific products had their source code exposed. The timing, however, suggests the breach may be related to a major supply chain attack targeting various open source applications to gain access to numerous companies.  Linked to the profit-driven hacker groups TeamPCP and Lapsus$, this campaign has impacted several cybersecurity firms, including Checkmarx, Aqua Security, and Bitwarden.  The hackers exploited trust in software development and security infrastructure, compromising CI/CD pipelines to distribute trojanized updates and malicious extensions, which enabled large-scale exfiltration of credentials and source code from affected enterprise environments. NASA wants to make supersonic travel quieter. On Thursday the agency released new footage of its X-59 jet, a still-in-development plane that is designed to break the sound barrier over land—but with a sonic “thud” rather than a boom. Faster air travel speeds mean shorter flights. But when an aircraft travels more rapidly than the speed of sound, it creates shock waves, generating a sonic boom. Those sonic booms can be a nuisance for people living nearby and can even cause damage to homes and startle animals. The X-59 jet is NASA’s answer to that problem. Featuring a needlelike tip, it’s designed to travel at more than 1,000 miles per hour—about twice as fast as a commercial jet—while limiting the noise of the boom. NASA expects its sonic “thump” to be as loud as “distant thunder” or the thud of a car door closing down the block. Vimeo, the online video service aimed at professionals, has suffered a data breach that reportedly affected numerous users and clients of the platform. The company admitted this through a statement indicating that the security incident actually occurred at Anodot, an external analytics provider. Their initial investigation determined that the databases accessed by the cybercriminals mainly contained technical data, video titles, and metadata, and in some cases, client email addresses. The threat actors reportedly did not obtain video content, valid user login credentials, or payment card information, they assure. Additionally, Vimeo insists that "the access credentials of Vimeo users and clients are secure" and that the incident has not caused any disruption to their systems or service. "Upon learning of the incident, we immediately deactivated all Anodot credentials, removed the Anodot integration with Vimeo systems, and hired external security experts to assist in the investigation. We have also notified law enforcement authorities," they state. The investigation continues, and the firm has committed to "taking appropriate measures" as more information becomes available. For now, the audiovisual company has not provided information on the number of users and clients potentially affected by this unauthorized access. The hackers primarily got video metadata, titles, and email addresses from Vimeo. The ADT hack was worse: ShinyHunters obtained over 10 million records, including 5.5 million email addresses, names, physical addresses, and telephone numbers. In some cases, they got the last four digits of customers' Social Security numbers and their birthdates. Keep tabs on your identity out there.
