A South Wales Police officer who blackmailed and threatened underage girls to send him explicit photos of themselves on Snapchat has been jailed for life, Catriona Aitken reports for BBC News. Lewis Edwards groomed more than 200 girls online aged 10 to 16 from November 2020 until February 2023 and images of 207 of them were found on his devices. The young girls were told by Edwards, who used used a profile picture of a teenage boy to trick his victims, to take nude pictures, sometimes wearing only items of their school uniform, and perform sexual acts.Edwards admitted to 160 counts of child sexual abuse and blackmail, receiving multiple concurrent prison sentences, including several life sentences with a minimum term of 12 years. Edwards will also be subject to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, barring him from working with children or vulnerable people and requiring him to keep his personal details logged with police.

Snap’s business has been on life support for a while now, with Apple’s ad tracking changes on iOS, competition from TikTok, and a combination of other factors leading to a collapse in its revenue growth. That said, all is not lost: based on the third quarter earnings results that Snap announced on Tuesday, its ads business appears to finally be on the upswing. Total revenue grew to nearly $1.2 billion, an increase of 5 percent from the same time last year. Snap is still a money-losing company, though. It posted a net loss of over $368 million for the quarter, slightly higher than the year-ago period.While the return to revenue growth is certainly a welcome sign, Snap’s management team continues to be in a state of flux. Jerry Hunter, who was named chief operating officer just over a year ago, is retiring and not being replaced, according to the company. CEO Evan Spiegel will directly oversee the top business leaders for Snap’s three biggest regions for the foreseeable future. The man allegedly uploaded child pornography through the social media application Snapchat.ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit, along with the Taber Police Service (TPS), arrested 25-year-old Brady Pavka, and said they searched a home in Taber on October 19, 2023. Pavka was charged with accessing, possessing, and making available child pornography.Chief Graham Abela of the TPS said, “Child sexual exploitation offences have steadily increased across the province and have a substantial impact on communities big and small. We applaud our partnership with ALERT and out shared commitment to keeping kids safe online.”ICE’s investigation is ongoing, with its next steps being a forensic analysis and inspection of seized mobile devices.

A southern Alberta man is facing charges after allegedly using Snapchat to share child pornography. Brady Pavka, 25, of Taber is charged with accessing, possessing, and making child pornography available. The charges come following an investigation from the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team's (ALERT) Child Exploitation Unit (ICE), in collaboration with the Taber Police Service. ALERT launched its investigation in early October based on a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). Officers arrested Pavka and searched his home last Thursday, seizing mobile devices that will now undergo forensic analysis. He has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 21. "Child sexual exploitation offences have steadily increased across the province and have a substantial impact on communities big and small," said Chief Graham Abela of the Taber Police Service. "The work of ALERT investigating those that allegedly prey on the most vulnerable is really needed at this time," added John MacDonald, chair of the Taber Municipal Police Commission and member of ALERT’s Civilian Advisory Committee. The town of Taber is located about 235 kilometres southeast of Calgary and 45 kilometres east of Lethbridge.
