'Sextortion' schemes target two out of every three teens, Snap research shows

This story discusses suicide. If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, please contact the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or 1-800-273-TALK (8255). About two out of every three teenagers are targeted by "sextortion" schemes, according to new research conducted by Snap Inc., which owns the social media app Snapchat.Sextortion is a "serious crime," according to the FBI, by which perpetrators exchange or receive nude photos from victims over the internet then use the victim's photos to extort them for money or more nude photos. Sextortionists disproportionately target young men for money on social media apps, including Snapchat, Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook and others, though girls are also targets for explicit images and photos. "For young males who have experienced a sextortion incident — and the majority are males — they regularly tell us that when they share the situation with their parents, they feel relieved. We advise them to report to hotlines and helplines, to report to the platforms and to tell their parents, a friend or a trusted adult. They should not be going through this alone," Arda Gerkens, president of Offlimits, the Dutch child abuse hotline formerly known as EOKM, said.GROWING SNAPCHAT ‘SEXTORTION’

Snapchat Finally Brings Dark Mode to Android, But Only for Snapchat+ Subscribers

Snapchat Dark Mode | SnapchatAfter years of waiting, Snapchat has finally released dark mode for Android users. However, there’s a catch: you’ll need to be a Snapchat+ subscriber to use it.While Snapchat+ has its own benefits, what boggles me is the fact that a feature as simple as this one needs a subscription to use, but maybe that’s just part of ‘early access’ due to which its only available to paid users.Who knows, maybe later Snapchat will start rolling it out to all users, as we have seen how its basically free on iOS for the past three to four years. To enable dark mode on Android, you’ll need to follow these steps:Open the Snapchat app.Tap on your Bitmoji avatar in the top left corner.Tap on the Snapchat+ banner.Toggle the Dark Mode switch to the on position.Go to Settings > App Appearance > Always Dark.Dark Mode on Snapchat+Once you’ve enabled dark mode, the entire Snapchat app will be converted to a dark theme. This will make it easier to use the app in low-light conditions and reduce eye strain. It shouldn’t be a premium feature, but rather one that is encouraged. If you still want to try it out, Snapchat+ costs $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year. How to Enable Dark

What Does The Green Dot Mean On Snapchat? Privacy Indicators, Explained – Screen Rant

Snapchat users often see a green dot when they open the app, both on iPhones and Android phones. Here's what that indicator really means. Snapchat users might see a green dot when they open the app, but there's actually a very simple explanation for this. Snapchat also has a yellow dot that appears in the Chat screen, but unlike the green dot, this dot is part of the Snapchat interface, and is used to indicate unread notifications. There are other color-coded indicators seen across the app, ranging from blue to purple to yellow. These colors are often seen on the Chat page, but they can also appear on Stories. The green dot is actually a feature of the iOS and Android operating systems, and isn't exclusive to Snapchat. When opening the app, users may see a green dot in the top right corner of the camera screen. This dot is a privacy indicator, letting users know that Snapchat is accessing the camera (or camera and microphone). On an iPhone, users will see a small green dot that looks like an LED, while on Android, the dot may be larger or more prominent. This security feature was introduced for iPhone with
