Luxury watchmakers woo Generation Z with Snapchat and bitcoin – Japan Today

Luxury watchmakers are using Snapchat and bitcoin to woo Generation Z, unused to wearing something on the wrist, believing younger buyers could become a powerful driver of sales growth for top-end timepieces. Millennials (born between 1980 and the late 1990s) and Generation Z (born between 1997 and 2010) are taking an early interest in luxury goods, according to a study by management consultants Bain & Company and the Italian luxury brands association Altagamma Foundation. Their spending is expected to increase three times faster than that of other generations by 2030, it said. At last week's Watches and Wonders trade fair in Geneva, where 48 brands such as Rolex, Cartier and Patek Philippe showed off their latest creations, Swiss watchmakers were well aware of the trend. "It is very important that once a year we showcase that wearing a watch is trendy, and even something for the youngest generation which is not used to wearing watches," Rolex chief executive Jean-Frederic Dufour said during the annual fair. The sector needs to reach out to a generation "used to seeing everything on a screen", he said. On a stand dedicated to innovation, representatives from the Snapchat instant messaging app showed off an application

Three Alabama school districts sue Meta, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat over student mental health

Three Alabama school districts are suing Meta, TikTok, YouTube and Snapchat, alleging that the social media companies have created a “youth mental health crisis.”In a complaint filed on Tuesday in California state court, lawyers representing Baldwin County, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa City school systems called the platforms “unreasonably dangerous” and “addictive” products that are increasingly causing students to perform poorly in school.“This youth mental health crisis is infecting all aspects of education,” they wrote. “Students are experiencing record rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues because of Defendants’ intentional conduct. These students perform worse in school, are less likely to attend school, more likely to engage in substance use and to act out, all of which directly affects Plaintiffs’ ability to fulfill their educational mission.”The lawsuit, Baldwin County Public Schools v. Meta Platforms, is the latest to join a swath of social media litigation taking part in California, where the companies are based. This complaint alleges public nuisance and negligence claims under Alabama law, and seeks financial compensation, punitive damages and “equitable relief to fund prevention education and addiction treatment.”“The harm created by social media companies has strained already limited school resources as educators attempt to combat the widespread problems

Will US Ban TikTok? Move Would Benefit Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube – Variety

The odds of the U.S. banning TikTok are higher after the app’s CEO testified before a House committee, according to analysts. During the hearing, American politicians — both Republicans and Democrats — expressed frustration over what they saw as evasive and unconvincing answers about China’s influence over TikTok and the communist regime’s ability to track user data via the app, as well as TikTok’s efforts to curb misinformation and harmful content, particularly for children who use the app. In his D.C. appearance Thursday before the House Energy and Commerce Committee, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew said the popular app, used by more than 150 million American users monthly, is committed to ensuring user privacy and security as well as safety protocols for teenagers. He insisted, as TikTok has claimed before, that the company has never furnished U.S. user data to the Chinese Communist Party (nor has the CCP ever made such a request). Chew talked up TikTok’s “Project Texas,” intended to bring user data fully under the aegis of U.S.-based personnel and hosted on Oracle infrastructure by the end of 2023. But as Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) pointed out during the hearing, the CCP has the legal authority to compel
