Snapchat warns Apple's privacy changes could hurt ad business

Snapchat reported its fourth-quarter earnings Thursday. Angela Lang/CNET Snap, the parent company of disappearing messaging app Snapchat, warned that Apple's upcoming privacy update could make it tougher to rake in ad dollars, even as it reported fourth-quarter results that beat analyst expectations. The company also said some advertisers had paused campaigns in the first two weeks of January after the deadly riot at the US Capitol on Jan. 6.  CFO Derek Andersen said upcoming changes to Apple's iOS 14 will "present another risk of interruption to demand" though he also noted the long-term impact is unclear. Apple plans to release a new privacy feature in the first quarter that will require users to opt in to apps collecting their data from other companies' apps and websites.  Everything Apple CNET's Apple Report newsletter delivers news, reviews and advice on iPhones, iPads, Macs and software. Apple said it's making the changes to the popular mobile operating system to give users more control over their data. Social networks, including Facebook, have expressed concern the changes will affect the ability of advertisers to reach customers with targeted ads. Facebook said Apple's changes are about "profit not privacy" because if apps turned more to in-app purchases…

Older social media posts surface of Cedar Falls students using racist term 1 of 2 CEDAR FALLS — Cedar Falls Community Schools has disciplined students over multiple years for social media posts that have recently been shared online.Janelle Darst, a spokeswoman for the district, said officials became aware of the compilations of posts containing a racial epithet about the same time they were dealing with a similar incident last month resulting in student discipline. That involved a photo posted to Snapchat of a white Cedar Falls High School student holding a large cookie on a tray with the N-word written in frosting. However, the compilations of social media posts that also contain the N-word in written or spoken form – some of which originated with district students – predate the incident last month.“We were basically aware of all of those prior” to the cookie incident, said Darst. “Those are either junior high or high school students if they are our students, and the most recent of those are from November.” Posts were also from 2019-20 and multiple previous school years.Students from the high school and both junior highs were disciplined at the time the social media posts first came to light.…

Ryan Reynolds Is A Chainsaw Wielding Maniac In Trailer For His Snapchat Show

In a new Snapchat series, Reynolds will try his hand at various skills he has no experience with and probably no business attempting. As if the pandemic wasn't reason enough to stay inside, a trailer for Ryan Reynolds' new Snapchat show Ryan Doesn't Know warns that the unhinged actor is armed with a chainsaw and at large somewhere outdoors. Reynolds is currently working on Deadpool 3 along with a variety of other movies including The Adam Project, an adaptation of the board game Clue, and a musical version of A Christmas Carol. Reynolds rose to prominence playing a charming manchild in National Lampoon's Van Wilder and has since found fame starring in action blockbusters like Deadpool and Green Lantern. Despite a track record playing leading men, the Canadian actor's mischievous sense of humor often sneaks into his performances. That sense of humor has infused other projects as Reynolds has expanded his professional hyphenate to include producer, director, and businessman. For instance, when the internet collectively mocked a Peloton ad featuring an actress who appeared to be dead inside, Reynolds cast the same actress in a commercial for his brand Aviation Gin. Reynolds is particularly well versed in social media and meme humor for someone of his celebrity: he recently nailed a contribution to the Bernie Sanders meme and is involved in a…

The Number of People Who Use Facebook May Have Peaked

Email Folks in the US and Canada are staying indoors now more than ever, and yet, they're still using Facebook less. More so than any other social media outlet in history, Facebook has become a staple of the internet. However, in recent months the number of daily active users in the US and Canada has actually stalled. So, could we be witnessing the decline of Facebook? Has Facebook Peaked? Last week, Facebook posted its 2020 performance update . In it, we learned that the social network has added almost 300 million more active users over the course of 2020. However, that growth entirely has come from outside of North America. Facebook added 5 million daily active users in 2020, but that's while losing daily active users in the US and Canada throughout the year. Definitely not the sort of data you'd expect to see after a global pandemic has plagued everyone around the world, forcing everyone indoors. North America is Facebook's first and oldest market, so if this is a sign of what's to come, the platform is going to have to do something to make itself "essential" for people again. Thankfully, there should be more than enough funds to do…

Community forums on race in the works to help Naugatuck heal from racist social media posts

by: LaSalle Blanks, News8 Reporter Posted: Jan 30, 2021 / 06:19 PM EST / Updated: Jan 30, 2021 / 10:31 PM EST NAUGATUCK, Conn. (WTNH) — The NAACP and Naugatuck Mayor Pete Hess are considering ways to work with the community to talk about race, understanding, and healing. This comes after the police chief’s daughter’s racist Snapchat posts were discovered, two years after they were sent out. The posts have caused a public outcry in the borough. Naugatuck High School students marched to the Green earlier this week to rally against racism. Mayor Hess was at the rally, saying students had a right to feel hurt and be heard. He had a meeting with local NAACP leaders the night before the rally. Several more meetings are planned. “It’s a process, and it’s not over yet,” said Mayor Hess. “They’ll be doing their own analysis and thinking about recommendations, and they’ll be coming back and talking with us.” One idea the NAACP and the mayor have to help heal the community is to start forums on race. “We all know these types of mindsets are taught behaviors. So, it’s a cross-section of having training not only for the police but for…
