Snapchat video scrutinised in fatal crash inquest

A SNAPCHAT video and a man who claimed to be the last person to see two men before they were involved in a fatal car crash, were on Wednesday the focus of the inquest into the death of Croydon man Damon Edward McCoy. Mr McCoy and Nick Michael Rogers, 29, were in a Toyota Landcruiser when it crashed about 17km south of Croydon on July 21, 2016. Mr McCoy died at the scene. Mr Rogers survived the high-speed rollover and was later found injured and naked in the area. A key inquest issue is determining who was driving the Landcruiser before the crash. The Cairns Coroners Court heard that Mr McCoy sent a 10-second Snapchat video to close friend Anna Stratford. Ms Stratford testified the video showed a "panoramic" panning of the Landcruiser's cabin before the crash. She said she saw Mr McCoy as the passenger and got a "clear view" of Mr Rogers as the driver. A key issue in the inquest into the death of Croydon man Damon Edward McCoy is to determine who was driving the Landcruiser he was travelling in before it crashed. The court heard Ms Stratford did not tell others, including her mother and Mr McCoy's sister, about the video until days later because of her grief about Mr McCoy's death. "When I woke up next morning, I was a bit of a mess in finding out all the information. I was very vague to her (mum)," she said. "My biggest concern was the family … not to put ideas in anybody's head about who drove." Coroner Nerida Wilson said that while she acknowledged Ms Stratford was experiencing a significant loss, she was confused by why Ms Straford did not tell anyone about the video until later. "It just strikes me as unusual when…

Every improvement or new feature usually comes after some research and testing with smaller audiences so the people at Facebook felt confident that a feature in a competitor's service would be beneficial on theirs as well. And that's when the vanish mode was offered in Facebook Messenger.Vanish mode on Facebook messenger is kinda cool, just like Snapchat— Ryan|Middle Management👔 (@FourStarManager) November 10, 2020 Article continues below advertisementSimilar to Snapchat's feature, vanish mode allows the sender of a message to set their note to vanish, or disappear after a certain amount of time. This was one of the top features in Snapchat which made it popular among people who were dating — and teenagers — who would send fast messages that couldn't be read after they disappeared.Facebook unveiled the new feature in Messenger, and it was also available on Instagram, another app owned by Facebook. Facebook's version of vanish mode allows the person who is sending the message to choose exactly how long they want the message to be viewable for by setting a timer which allows them to have a private and secret conversation with someone else.  Once the timer has expired, there's no way for the recipient to view the message again. Article continues below…

Irving Azoff Says Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok “Resist Paying for Music Until You Go Beat the F–k …

Irving Azoff has offered a decidedly blunt take on the music payments (or the relative lack thereof) made by social networks including Facebook, Snapchat, and TikTok, indicating that they “resist paying for music until you go beat the f—k out of them.”The 72-year-old management mainstay, who hasn’t hesitated to voice his opinion of big-name content platforms in the past, disclosed his firmly worded stance on social networks in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times. This piece was published late last week, just before the Full Stop Management exec and chairman was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a non-performer, receiving the Ahmet Ertegun Award. Irving Azoff nonchalantly noted in the article that Travis Scott is “unmanageable” and opined: “I don’t think there’s that many smart people in our business.”And after emphasizing that he continues to manage musicians as part of a larger effort to pursue artist-rights causes – not solely due to the far-reaching financial benefits delivered by his star-studded client roster – the Music Artists Coalition co-founder turned his attention to social platforms’ unwillingness to “pay fair market value” for music. “These people, when they start out – whether it’s Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok, whatever – they resist paying for music until you go beat the f—k out of them,” stated the longtime Eagles manager. “And then of course, none of them pay fair market value and they get away with it. Your company’s worth $30 billion and you can’t spend 20 grand for a song that becomes a phenomenon on your channel? Even when they pay, artists don’t get enough.“Music, as a commodity, is more important than it’s ever been, and more unfairly monetized for the creators. And that’s what creates an opportunity for people like me,” finished the former Live Nation executive…

3 Millennial-Focused Stocks Poised for Bull Runs

Snap and two other high-growth tech companies are still locking in fickle millennial users. Millennials, meaning people are currently between their mid-20s and late-30s, are often portrayed as a fickle generation with short attention spans. Former McDonald's CEO Steve Easterbrook, for example, once declared millennials were "promiscuous in their brand loyalty." But if we take a closer look at the millennial market, we can still find plenty of companies that have locked in that fickle generation. Let's examine three high-growth players that fit that bill, and why their stocks could still have plenty of room to run. 1. The social media platform: Snap Snap's (NYSE:SNAP) Snapchat is often associated with Gen Z, but millennials also account for a large percentage of the social media app's users. In 2018, The Manifest claimed 53% of millennials checked Snapchat daily, compared to 18% of Generation X users and 7% of baby boomers. Image source: Getty Images. During Snap's latest conference call, CEO Evan Spiegel claimed Snapchat reached "over 90% of the Gen Z population, and 75% of the Gen Z and millennial population, in countries like the U.S., the U.K., and France." Snapchat's popularity with those younger users enabled it to continue expanding, even as Facebook's Instagram aggressively cloned its features. Snap's daily active users grew 18% year over year to 249 million last quarter, its average revenue per user rose 28%, and its total revenue surged 52% to $679 million -- marking its strongest year-over-year growth in over two years. It also narrowed its GAAP loss and posted an adjusted EBITDA profit. Wall Street expects Snap's revenue to rise 42% this year and 41% next year. It's also expected to post a narrower loss and its first full-year non-GAAP profit in 2021. Snap's stock has already rallied 150% this year and isn't…

Some Google Pixel 5 users unimpressed with in-app camera quality on Instagram/Snapchat & we …

Bad photos on Androids via third-party apps like Instagram and Snapchat is not exactly a new phenomenon. This issue has been present since Android’s early days, and the OS’ vast device fragmentation is the one to blame. Also, since the Pixel 2, Google shipped the series with a dedicated Pixel Visual Core chip that handled the device camera’s software processing needs. The chip was essentially a NPU, which stands for Neural Processing Unit. The Google Pixel 5 Neural cores are designed to handle logical instructions and shave some burden off the main CPU. This accelerates image processing algorithms and results in quicker processed images. Google’s changed strategy with the onset of the new Pixel 5 series has led to the chip’s omission from the device though. But this does not mean that the new Pixels will miss out on features offered by the previous generations. However, users say that while image quality via the built-in Google Camera app has largely remained the same, if not better, it has taken a hit when clicked via third-party apps like Instagram and Snapchat. I believe I read somewhere that snapchat doesn’t actually use the picture that you take, but instead it uses a screenshot of the photo on android, so they don’t have to optimize for every phone/display/camera. I’m pretty sure insta does the same thing. There are just a handful of devices that run iOS, and that’s why everything always just works better on iPhones. Developers can make sure their apps work on all of those Apple devices. Source It appears that Instagram made use of the Pixel Visual Core to slightly enhance photos. But since the omission, it is unable to do so. Pixel visual core used to communicate with third party apps directly but that’s not present on pixel 5…
