A man threatened his brother’s teenage ex-girlfriend after she went to the police to report an assault. Blackburn magistrates heard Ryan Hancock sent the girl threatening and abusive messages over Snapchat following his brother’s arrest. He told the probation officer preparing a pre-sentence report he felt “parental” responsibility for his younger brother, but District Judge Alexandra Preston told Hancock his comments were misdirected. “You should have been addressing your brother’s behaviour with him rather than threatening his victim,” said District Judge Preston. Hancock, 22, of Pink Street, Burnley, pleaded guilty to sending a menacing message and making threats to damage property. He was sentenced to 42 weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months, with 20 days’ rehabilitation activity requirement. He was made subject to a restraining order for two years, which prohibits any contact with the victim, and was ordered to pay £85 costs and a £187 victim surcharge. Police and schools are on alert after posts appearing to incite children to fight using knives spread across social media. The “school wars” trend has seen the spread of posts on platforms such as TikTok and Snapchat, which separate schools into red and blue teams and encourage pupils to fight using bladed weapons. At least a dozen accounts encouraging or threatening violence as part of the trend have been removed following police contact. A number of schools, mostly in London, are understood to have written to parents asking them to remain vigilant regarding the trend. In a letter seen by The Independent, one west London school warned the craze is causing “serious concern” and urged parents to check their children’s smartphones “in order to keep our school safe”. Graphics listing schools as ‘red’ or ‘blue’ are circulated on social media (TikTok) The posts divide schools into “red” and “blue” teams and urge children to “jump” anyone they see from an opposing team. In one, seen by The Independent, children are urged to “be violent” and use compass points to attack each other. Others suggest they will get video game-style “points” if they “punch an opp” (opponent) or “stain an opp”.

EBay axes 800 staff after Depop acquisition announcement EBay announced plans to cut 800 positions, 6% of its full-time employees, across the company on Thursday. The plan to lay off staff comes about a week after eBay announced it will acquire clothing resale app Depop from Etsy for $1.2 billion in cash.  Dates for eBay’s upcoming layoffs have not been announced yet. The e-commerce platform had 12,300 staff as of December 2025, and last week reported a 15% revenue increase to $3 billion for Q4. The layoffs are part of eBay’s plans to “reinvest across our business and align our structure with strategic priorities,” according to a company spokesperson. LOS ANGELES (BP) – A court case over social media’s addictive properties is the first in a series in the coming months, fueling discussions over technology’s proper place in society and parental responsibilities for hedging its influence. “K.G.M.” is a young woman among many suing several social media companies. She claims that watching YouTube from the time she was 6 and having accounts with Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok by 14 led to her addiction and bouts of physical and emotional harm. Snap, which owns Snapchat, and TikTok settled in January. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified last week, pushing back against claims that Instagram was intentionally harmful to children. The Court denied a writ petition appeal by the parent company of the social media app, allowing the case to move forward in state court. The state is alleging harms against children in its lawsuit. In a petition filed in March of last year, Snap Inc argued the platform should not be subject to litigation in Nevada courts on the grounds that it did not specifically direct its business toward Nevadans.
