According to Fishers Indiana Police Department (FIPD), 24-year-old Jonathan Wesley Peternel, son of Pastor Nathan Peternel, was arrested on Oct. 23 and charged with seven felony counts related to child sex crimes. Australia is changing the way young people use social media. The government has passed a new law that will stop users under 16 from having accounts on popular apps like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat. Why is Australia Regulating Social Media For Underaged Users? Starting December 10, 2025, all major platforms will have to close accounts belonging to users under 16. They will also need to verify the age of every new user. The new law, called the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Act 2024, is designed to protect young users. Companies that fail to follow the rules could face fines of up to AUD 49.5 million or 10% of their global revenue. The Australian government believes this step is necessary for protecting mental health. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the law aims to reduce anxiety, depression, and pressure caused by social media. Elyse Foster was just 22 when she died at the Royal Stoke University Hospital on the afternoon of October 17 last year. Members of the Hancock County Board of Education are taking steps to join an effort to push social media companies to take more ownership of the effects their platforms may have on the minds of the nation’s children. As part of Monday’s meeting, the school board affirmed a recommendation from Superintendent of Schools Dan Enich to begin the process of joining a national class action lawsuit on social media addiction against the ownership of four of the world’s largest social media platforms. Enich explained it has been a topic of discussion among officials from several school systems in West Virginia, with some boards of education already signing on to one of the thousands of class action lawsuits currently filed in the nation’s court systems. “A lot of the superintendents have been talking about it,” Enich said, indicating Hancock County Schools also has been approached by a few legal firms and organizations involved in one or more of the lawsuits.
