Surat: What began as a friendship on Snapchat allegedly spiralled into sexual assault, blackmail and the loss of 36 tolas of gold, with a Surat woman accusing a 23-year-old man of repeatedly exploiting her financially and physically over several months. Kapodra police registered an FIR against one Tonish Padshala based on a complaint filed by a 32-year-old woman who alleged that he raped her, repeatedly threatened her and extorted money and gold after the two got to know each other on Snapchat in Feb 2026. According to the complaint, the accused told the woman he was facing a cybercrime case and needed Rs 1.80 lakh to resolve the matter. The woman allegedly provided the money. Ashley John, 26, of Gwaun Cae Gurwen, used Snapchat in October 2024 to contact a profile he thought belonged to a child. During their exchanges, John claimed to be a 17-year-old sheep farmer, before sending indecent images of himself and requesting sexual images in return. He was charged with attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, attempting to cause or incite a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and attempting to cause a child under 13 to look at an image of sexual activity. Having initially denied all three offences, John changed his plea to guilty on 6 July. He was sentenced to three years and ten months in prison. PARIS -- A Magazine man accused of soliciting sex from a 13-year-old girl remains in custody despite his attempt to impersonate another man, post bond and be released from jail. Gavin K. Wells, 25, of Magazine is charged in the initial case with sexual indecency with a child and sexual solicitation of a minor involving an offer or agreement to pay a minor to engage in sexual activity, according to Logan County Circuit Court records in the Booneville District. He pleaded not guilty in a Friday court appearance, court records show. On June 2, Wells sent nude photos of himself to a 13-year-old girl and requested nude photos of her during a conversation on the social media app SnapChat, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. He also asked to meet the girl and offered to pay her to have sex, the Logan County Sheriff's Office reported. Wells was arrested June 5 and formal charges were filed Tuesday, court records show. On July 8, Wells was charged with nonfinancial identity fraud for an offense that occurred June 10, according to court documents. WAGENER, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - A Wagener man has been charged with sexual exploitation of a minor after an investigation involving Snapchat, according to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office. Matthew Cory Hulst, 35, of Wagener, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with two counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, according to jail bookings. Matthew Cory Hulst (Contributed) The investigation was initiated on May 26 after the sheriff’s office received a CyberTip report from the S.C. Attorney General’s Office related to child sexual abuse material. Investigators served a search warrant on Snapchat’s parent company, Snap Inc., which revealed Hulst had possessed and distributed child sexual abuse material involving a female child under the age of 10 through the app on May 2, according to the arrest warrant. A search warrant was also executed at Hulst’s home on Columbia Road on Tuesday. Hulst has admitted to the offense, according to the arrest warrant.
