BYRON, Ill. (WIFR) - Byron High School is the latest to be hit with a new artificial intelligence Snapchat filter popular with teens. About a week ago, Byron High School administrators began hearing commotion about a new AI filter making the rounds among students. “We didn’t know anything about it, we just heard about it,” said Byron High School Principal, Andy Donaldson. “Unfortunately, early this week we had a situation pop up which we had to handle and then we learned more about it.” The Snapchat filter uses AI to create images of people doing whatever the user asks it to. All the user has to do is type in a statement and it will create a photo within seconds, regardless of whether someone knows they are in the photo. “We want them to understand that what they put on social media can impact others,” Donaldson explained. School leaders said they have seen students use the filter to generate photos like ‘make them kiss’ and ‘make them fight,’ sending waves of uncertainty through the hallways of whether the photos were real or fake. “It was fortunately an isolated incident right now from what were working with,” Donaldson said. The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) has expressed deep concern over the Pakistani government’s decision to de-notify 16 Afghan refugee villages across Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Punjab, warning that the move could lead to forced returns of Afghans, including registered refugees, to Afghanistan. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the UNHCR said that many Afghan refugees have lived in these villages for decades and have established livelihoods and communities. Forcing them to leave within a short period, it warned, could have “serious and negative impacts” on their lives, livelihoods, and reintegration prospects in Afghanistan. “The return of refugees should be organised, phased, voluntary, and carried out in dignity and safety, with respect for rights and protection of those in need,” said Philippa Candler, UNHCR’s Representative in Pakistan. The decision follows the government’s Illegal Foreigners Repatriation Plan (IFRP), under which Afghan nationals residing without valid documentation have been asked to leave the country. According to a uniform citation obtained by People, police were initially contacted by the student on October 1, at which point he said that a former substitute teacher of his was communicating with him "for the purpose of meeting to have sex." The boy, whose age and name were not released, said that the teacher, identified as 30-year-old Krystal Sims, and himself exchanged Snapchats when she substituted for his class. The victim said that shortly after exchanging information, the pair planned to meet up for sex in the nearby town of Cave City. The student recorded one of the phone calls he had with Sims on August 22, during which "a female is heard... asking if the juvenile is coming to meet with her," per the citation. On Monday, the Barron County Sheriff’s Office said that the suspect in a deadly shooting in Barron, Wis., has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The sheriff’s office identified the suspect as 17-year-old Marcus Hinojosa from Almena, Wisconsin. He was at the apartment, and when his 17-year-old pregnant girlfriend, identified as Makayla Sadowski according to a verified GoFundMe, arrived at the apartment around 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1, Hinojosa shot her. Makayla Sadowski’s brother, 20-year-old Tyler Sadowski and a neighbor went to check on Makayla, and Hinojosa shot Tyler through the entry door, killing him, the press release says. First responders showed up minutes later, and a deputy heard a single gunshot from the apartment. Makayla was seven months pregnant, according to the GoFundMe for the family, and the sheriff’s office says that her baby was born due to her injuries and is doing well at the hospital. Makayla is in stable condition at the hospital, according to her family. The sheriff’s office said there was a “disturbing” Snapchat involving the shooting, and they are still working with Snapchat to get it removed.
