5:39 PM PST 3/11/2021 by Natalie Jarvey Courtesy of Roku Former Quibi senior content executives Colin Davis and Brian Tannenbaum are among those who have joined Roku. Two months after acquiring the Quibi library, Roku has tapped a handful of the defunct mobile app's former executives to manage the rollout of that programming on its platform. Two former senior content executives at Quibi, Colin Davis and Brian Tannenbaum, have updated their LinkedIn profiles to indicate their new roles at Roku. Former Quibi business affairs executive Ryan Bocskay has also indicated via the social network that he recently started a job at Roku. It's unclear how many other Quibi employees have joined the streaming media company. "Quibi built a talented team to support the development of really fantastic programming," a Roku spokesman said in a statement. "We were thrilled to welcome a number of them to the Roku team in recent weeks and their deep expertise will help ensure the successful launch and growth of the Quibi content on The Roku Channel." Vimeo's Section 230 Win in Pastor's Discrimination Suit Affirmed by Appeals Court

March 11, 2021 4:32pm PT by Ashley Cullins MARTIN BUREAU/AFP via Getty Images Vimeo was entitled to delete the account of a pastor who posted videos about sexual orientation change efforts, according to a federal appeals court, which affirmed a decision that the video-sharing site is protected by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. James Domen and Church United in June 2019 sued video-sharing site Vimeo for allegedly censoring and discriminating against him based on his "preferred" sexual orientation and religious beliefs. The pastor, who says he identifies as a "former homosexual," posted a series of videos in an effort to challenge a California Assembly bill that would have expanded laws that ban sexual orientation change efforts (SOCE). Vimeo sent a warning letter, explaining that it doesn't allow videos that promote SOCE, and threatening to delete the videos or the entire Church United account if Domen didn't remove the offending content. U.S. District Judge Stewart D. Aaron in January dismissed the suit, finding Section 230 gave Vimeo immunity from such a suit because it restricted the content in good faith. On Thursday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit agreed and affirmed the decision. While there's been…

Myanmar's state-run enterprises shunned by global tech firms

Major global tech firms have stepped up to reexamine the use of their platforms by military-owned companies including state telco Mytel and television network MRTV, but activists argue that only “stance and action” could prevent the situation from worsening. Vimeo, a US video streaming site, said on Thursday that it is reviewing a channel owned by the Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV), according to a Reuters report. The broadcaster which has served as the government’s mouthpiece since the coup, published its first video on the channel on March 7. As of publication, the account was still active on Vimeo’s platform, with a total of 161 short daily news videos. While Vimeo did not respond immediately to KrASIA’s request for comment, a spokeswoman told Reuters that the video is under review by its trust and safety team, and that it will only be pulled if it violates the content guidelines or causes harm. At least 60 people have been killed, and 2,008 arrested, charged, or sentenced during weeks of violent crackdown following the February 1 coup, according to data published on Wednesday by local human rights group Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). On Friday, YouTube took down MRTV together with…
