Salmon farm creates 'serious threat' to life in a protected Scottish sea zone

CONSERVATIONISTS young and old are opposing a plan for a large fish farm which they say threatens to damage "fragile" marine habitats in a protected zone off the north-west coast of Scotland. The Scottish Wildlife Trust has been joined by an youth environmental conservation organisation in saying the plans for a 12-cage salmon farm within the Wester Ross Marine Protected Area pose a "serious threat" to wildlife and the local creel fishing industry. Scottish Sea Farms has applied to the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency for a licence to site the 12-cage salmon farm near Horse Island in Loch Broom, off Ullapool. The Trust is concerned that waste material generated by the farm inthe Summer Isles archipelago would damage several fragile protected features including maerl beds, northern feather stars and kelp forests. It said the important habitats act as nurseries for a range of marine wildlife including economically important species such as scallops and lobsters. The conservation group said a number of the threatened habitats are also increasingly recognised as vital stores of blue carbon. Maerl, a type of algae similar to coral, can lock up carbon on the seabed for thousands of years. They have been joined by the youth environmental conservation organisation Ullapool Sea Savers, which said: "We cannot see the logic of declaring an area of sea protected and even restricting local fishing boats access to grounds that are then going to be turned into fish farms. "Whilst we have existing fish farms locally that do employ people and we can understand arguments for them being allowed to stay, it seems ridiculous to allow expansion or new farms to be allowed into these areas." Dr Sam Collin, the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s living seas manager added: “We support sustainable aquaculture and we want to see Scotland’s fish farming sector…

Working with a Master: Dermot Healy remembered

Filmmaker Kevin McCann writes for Culture about the late Irish novelist, playwright, poet and short-story writer, Dermot Healy, his collaborator on the short film Prison Door, which screens on RTÉ2 on Monday, November 9th. To celebrate the writer Dermot Healy who passed away in 2014, RTÉ will premiere the short film Prison Door on his birthday November 9th. I directed his screenplay for Prison Door and have many cherished memories of collaborating with the man once described by Roddy Doyle as "Ireland's greatest living writer". Irish artists, especially those of us from the border, hold the name of Dermot Healy up high. He was a beloved novelist, poet, short story writer and playwright. The late Séamus Heaney called him "the natural heir to Patrick Kavanagh". What struck me about Dermot was how he spoke with nature’s tongue. Silences, mutterings, long 'hmmmms' and musical tones were welcomed into the spake. In a conversation with Dermot, other parts of your spirit were speaking to other parts of his. A scene from Prison Door Dermot lived much of his life in Cavan, before moving to Sligo with his second wife Helen into a picturesque cottage right on the coast. For 26 years, they enjoyed the sound of the sea and a view of Benbulben sitting behind a limestone sea-ledge known as Serpents Rock. Irish artists, especially those of us from the border, hold the name of Dermot Healy up high. According to Helen, Dermot had a galvanised roof put on their cottage to hear the rain. Serpents Rock is a timeless place. With an old friend from Cavan, Skinny McArdle, he had fought back Atlantic waves by building cages of rocks to protect the road which ended at the cottage. Prison Door In 2012, I drove over to see Dermot to discuss working together. After…

YouTube and Vimeo censor new documentary Antifa: Rise of the Black Flags

Antifa, a far left-wing organization active in the US, that many refer to as extremist and militant, is among the topics that are not to be questioned or criticized on YouTube, but also on another, smaller video site, Vimeo. That’s judging by the fact that a new documentary, entitled, Antifa: Rise of the Black flags, published by Citizen Journalism Network, was removed from both platforms soon after it was uploaded on Saturday – even though a trailer was still available on YouTube. The reason given by Vimeo, considered by some as less prone to censorships and restrictions, but also less influential than YouTube, is that its users are not allowed to upload videos that show “extreme violence.” Double your web browsing speed with today's sponsor. Get Brave. Judging by the reports, YouTube is yet to explain the reasoning behind its decision to remove the video but the reason given on the video page is that the video was… “too long.” The documentary is around one hour long. real-time look at youtube saying “antifa: rise of the black flags” is just “too long” pic.twitter.com/Q5kP5oSuoQ — Gina A. 🤷‍♀️ (@hellogines) November 1, 2020 Mirrors of the video have so far been able to remain on the platform. It would be hard if not impossible to make a documentary about a group routinely involved in protests that tend to turn into violence and incidents without including depicting violence, but in addition to that, the film’s creator journalist and commentator Jack Posobiec says that no “extreme violence” was shown anyway, and that the reason given is merely an excuse to remove the video and hide this information from US public days ahead of the presidential election, in that way interfering with it. The documentary looks at Antifa’s rise in the wake of Donald Trump’s…

The Sound Design of 'Toy Story' is All About Balance

Home Columns Movies Meg Shields November 2, 2020Listen up: when you're building a world from the perspective of toys, sound design is critical. Welcome to The Queue — your daily distraction of curated video content sourced from across the web. Today, we’re watching an exploration of the sound design of Pixar’s Toy Story. The Academy Awards for Best Sound Design and Best Sound Mixing have long been a confusing part of the Oscars ceremony. What’s the difference between the two categories? Not a lot of viewers knew. Bluntly put: a sound mixer is in charge of how you hear a film; a sound editor is in charge of what you hear in a film. But you’d be forgiven for not being able to suss out the difference for yourself. There’s an un-said trend that “good” sound design and mixing should immerse you to the point that it goes unnoticed. This can make it difficult to tell design and mixing apart. More importantly, it can obfuscate the films that take a more expressionistic and creative approach to sound-based storytelling. For a great example of a film that foregrounds sound, we can look at Pixar‘s first feature film, Toy Story. As designed by Gary Rydstrom, the 1995 animated feature’s use of sound endows a sense of personality into each and every character, setting, and isolated emotional moment without distracting us from the dialogue or the core of the film’s narrative. Moreover, as the video essay below underlines, the Toy Story sound design (which was not nominated in either sound Oscar category) is so successful because it’s a balancing act: between the exaggerated and the realistic; between the small and the gargantuan; and between the literal and the subjective. Sound in Toy Story impresses a sense of scale that puts us in the cowboy boots of our…

YouTube and Vimeo censor 'Antifa: Rise of the Black Flags' documentary

Antifa: Rise of the Black Flags, a newly published documentary from Citizen Journalism Network, has been censored on both YouTube and Vimeo just hours after it was uploaded. Antifa: Rise of the Black Flags, a newly published documentary from Citizen Journalism Network, has been censored on both YouTube and Vimeo just hours after it was uploaded. The documentary chronicles the rise of the far-left militant group, Antifa, which politicians like Joe Biden have dismissed as “just an idea,” delving into the group’s rise to prominence following the election of Donald Trump and its impact on politics in the United States. The documentary sheds light on the short-lived Antifa "autonomous zone" in Seattle and the group's ties to terror-designated militant organizations in Syria. A trailer of Antifa remains available to watch on YouTube. The documentary features an overview of Antifa by conservative firebrand Jack Posobiec, and features interviews with journalists, activists, and others familiar with the far-left movement, including Raheem Kassam, David Reaboi, and The Post Millennial’s own Libby Emmons. The video was taken down from YouTube and Vimeo just hours after it went live on Saturday night, which informed its producers that the video was removed for violating the sites’ guidelines.“You cannot upload videos that depict extreme violence,” Vimeo stated.Vimeo censorshipJack Posobiec offered comment to The Post Millennial in response to the censorship of the documentary.“Social media companies will do anything to shut down serious discussion of Antifa,” said Posobiec.  “There are voices from all across the political spectrum in this, as well as former Antifa members. All of the clips we use are from news broadcasts and verified sources, there is nothing extreme. Most can be found right on YouTube on much bigger channels hosted without even a strike. This is being done to interfere in the election and hide information from…
