A new malicious WhatsApp mod that also works on Telegram has been discovered by Kaspersky researchers. The mod claims to offer extra features for the popular messaging apps, but it also secretly collects personal data from the users. The malware has infected over 340,000 devices in just one month, mainly targeting users who speak Arabic and Azeri. The most affected countries are Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Turkey, and Egypt. WhatsApp mods are unofficial versions of the app that add some functionality that the original app does not have. However, some of these mods also contain hidden spyware that can compromise the user’s privacy and security. Kaspersky has detected a new WhatsApp mod that has a malicious spyware module that can steal information from the device. The spyware module is activated by a service and a broadcast receiver that are not present in the original WhatsApp app. The receiver starts the service when the phone is turned on or plugged in. The service then sends a request to the attacker’s server with the device information, such as IMEI, phone number, country and network codes, and more. It also uploads the user’s contacts and account details every five minutes and can record

HNH said some of the groups have doubled in numbers in the past seven days. Ramananda was advising his friend,  Diwakar, who was currently abroad, on tax-related matters. Exploiting this connection, an unknown individual managed to hack Diwakar’s WhatsApp account. On November 8, Ramanand received a message from the hacked account, purportedly from Diwakara, stating that a medical emergency had arisen in India, and an urgent sum of Rs. 98,000 was needed. Despite attempting to transfer the money through Google Pay, Ramanand encountered issues and informed the scammer about the unsuccessful transaction. Unfazed, the fraudster provided another account number for the transfer. Trusting the legitimacy of the situation due to his prior business dealings with Diwakar, Ramanand sent Rs. 98,000 through Google Pay. Shortly after, he received a message stating that he actually needed Rs 5,98,000 and asked him to immediately send the remaining amount. Ramanand did not have that much money in his account and hence, he tried to contact Diwakar. Welsh first minister Mark Drakeford has today admitted that he does have WhatsApp downloaded on his Senedd-issued phone after telling the Welsh Parliament that he did not use the app. Yesterday in the Senedd, when asked by the Welsh Conservatives whether the government had used WhatsApp to make decisions during Covid and if that material was still accessible, Drakeford said: “I know, in my case, I’ve never had any deletion arrangements on the phone, because I would have no idea how to make it happen. I don’t use WhatsApp either.” Leader of the Welsh Conservatives Andrew RT Davies posted a picture on social media appearing to show Drakeford’s WhatsApp profile.
