WhatsApp users on fake apps have had their data stolen, Meta says – Android Police

The company is suing various Asian developers WhatsApp has been in a race to keep up with Telegram by matching old features and putting out new ones. Among the features currently under development on the widely-used messaging app is the ability to block users from taking screenshots of self-destructing images and videos. But parent company Meta may have some bigger privacy concerns on its plate, based on a lawsuit it has filed against a handful of firms that have developed unofficial WhatsApp clients on Android that were reportedly harvesting sensitive user data. Around a million WhatsApp users may have compromised their accounts using these unofficial apps since May, BleepingComputer reports. The lawsuit filed with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California names Hong Kong-based Rockey Tech HK Ltd., Beijing Luokai Technology Co. Ltd. from China, and ChitChat Technology Ltd., headquartered in Taiwan. Meta alleges that these companies collectively market their apps under names like "HeyMods," "Highlight Mobi," and "HeyWhatsApp," with the purpose of luring in WhatsApp users with claims of advanced platform features, then hijacking their accounts to siphon their data and spam contacts with messages. WhatsApp Tests Paid Subscription Service For Business Users – NDTV.com

New Delhi: Instant messaging and calling service WhatsApp premium subscription service has not officially launched yet; however it is now available for beta users.According to GSM Arena, this means that only the WhatsApp beta program members can access the Premium menu, where all the extra features reside.As per WABetainfo, the premium subscription will be tailored towards businesses, which means that most of the paid features aren't going to be particularly useful for the average user.Reportedly, the premium account gives users a customizable contact link to their WhatsApp, which can be changed once every three months.It is supposed to be an easier way for customers to find a certain business instead of typing in a phone number. Telegram has a similar feature where users can share a direct contact link with others.The paid version of the app will also allow up to 10 devices simultaneously connected to the same account. This way, employees can connect and manage the business account. The instant-messaging platform's feature will obstruct users from taking screenshots or recording any media sent on one view.According to WABetaInfo, a news portal reporting newest updates and latest releases by WhatsApp, some beta testers will witness the feature. The previous year, the application introduced an option where any image could be sent to "View Once" allowing the image to disappear after being opened, which is similar to Instagram and Snapchat. In a post on Telegram, he said that there was a security issue disclosed by WhatsApp itself last week. "All a hacker had to do to control your phone was send you a malicious video or start a video call with you on WhatsApp," he warned users. "A WhatsApp security issue exactly like this one was discovered in 2018, then another in 2019 and yet another one in 2020 (tap each year's link to see the corresponding vulnerability). And yes, in 2017 before that. Prior to 2016, WhatsApp didn't have encryption at all," said Durov who has slammed WhatsApp several time in the past.
