Parents are being warned of a common Whatsapp scam that is catching people out as fraudsters impersonate people’s kids and loved ones for financial gain. Scams occurring on the messaging app are becoming more and more common, as a UK expert emphasises the importance of being vigilant in a post-pandemic world. According to an analysis by Lloyds Bank, criminals have increasingly turned to WhatsApp as an approach to fleece their victims, and by their stats, twice the number of cases have been reported each month so far this year compared to 2021. Once someone has responded, they pretend to be a family member, usually a son or daughter, who has lost their phone and got a replacement. This gives them an excuse for having a different phone number, and means they don’t need to know someone’s name, just ‘Mum’ or ‘Dad’ can be enough.…

The Samaritans of Singapore (SOS) has officially launched a 24-hour WhatsApp text messaging service for individuals in distress. The WhatsApp service, known as CareText, is manned by SOS’ trained volunteers and staff. Those who prefer to share their struggles via text message can now text 9151 1767 for support, in addition to their 24-hour hotline 1-767 (1-SOS) and CareMail (). CareText was first piloted in July 2020 on limited hours before running 24/7 in the last eight months as a trial. With CareText, SOS answered 1,800 chats in August 2022. This is close to triple the number of chats received in August 2021. About 82 per cent of those who reached out to them via CareText are aged 29 and below. More youths have also stepped up to play a part to support their peers, with 80 per cent of trained CareText volunteers also aged 29 and below. WhatsApp's 'Kept Messages' Feature: How It WorksCurrently, WhatsApp has a 'Disappearing Messages' feature that, once enabled, deletes all the messages in a chat automatically after a certain interval of time, depending upon the timer set by the user or group admin. In the disappearing messages feature, users can set a timer for 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days after which all the messages in a selected chat will disappear. However, if someone doesn't want the messages to disappear, the new 'Kept messages' feature comes in, which if enabled, does not let the messages fade away. This new feature will retain the messages even if the 'Disappear Messages' option is turned on. Currently, this feature is available for Android 2.22.20.3 only. State Bank of India launched WhatsApp Banking Service. The banking service allows bankers to check bank balance and mini statements through the instant messaging app, WhatsApp. Bankers have to register for the WhatsApp banking service through their registered mobile number. Below, check out simple steps to use the SBI WhatsApp banking service. India’s largest public sector lender, the State Bank of India (SBI), has launched its WhatsApp banking service in India. This move came right after SBI chairman Dinesh Khara had disclosed plans for the bank to go the WhatsApp way. With the launch of SBI’s WhatsApp service, bankers can use WhatsApp banking service to check their account balance and mini statement, including complete insight about the last five transactions.
