This week, WhatsApp added a number of new features, including the ability to mute people during group calls (via Android Central). This sanity-saving feature appears to be useful not only for muting people who forget to do so, but also if you're in the same room as someone else on the call and don't want to hear an echo of their words. While some conferencing apps, such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams, allow hosts to mute all (or specific) participants, most don't allow individual users to mute who they want during a call. This feature adds a new level of control, but it's probably best reserved for tumultuous meetings with up to 8 people on video calls, or up to 32 on voice calls. In addition to the new muting feature, WhatsApp now allows you to message specific people while on a group call, which is useful if you need to send a note to someone or crack a joke that might not go over well with the entire group. WhatsApp has added new privacy tools intended to keep people’s personal information safe.The update lets people adjust who can see important personal information, such as the profile photo or status. Importantly, it also covers the “last seen” feature, which when switched on tells everyone when you last opened the app.By default, much of that information is shown to everybody. That means that people can use the “last seen” setting to seen when people were last on their phone, for instance.Now the app includes new tools that mean users can control who can see that information. The move came amid violent protests against the scheme in different parts of the country since it was announced a few days ago. However, information about these groups or if any action has been initiated against their administrators was not immediately known. Ruling out the rollback of the 'Agnipath' recruitment scheme despite widespread protests, the three services of the military on Sunday came out with a broad schedule of enrolment under the new policy and asserted that it was aimed at bringing down the age profile of the armed forces.

Bankers at Germany’s largest lender are being made to install an app that tracks communications on their phones as regulators clamp down on messaging between bankers and clients on platforms like WhatsApp.In the past several weeks Deutsche Bank has told some employees to download Movius, a US mobile app that enables compliance staff to monitor people’s calls, text messages, and WhatsApp conversations, according to the Financial Times.It is understood that the roll-out has been focused on work phones and not private devices.The monitoring push comes as regulators around the world become increasingly focused on bankers’ use of messaging apps. Last year, JP Morgan Chase was fined $200m by US regulators for failing to keep records of staff communications on personal devices.Senior managers at lenders have become more sensitive to private messaging as a result of the scrutiny. WhatsApp has released new privacy controls that allow users to decide who can view their profile pictures and who cannot. Part of the privacy controls also allow users to choose who can see their ‘last seen’ status, including the ‘About’ section.
