WhatsApp's reclusive founder has quietly become a megadonor to Jewish causes

(JTA) – The fighting in Ukraine has been called “a WhatsApp war” amid widespread reliance on messaging apps by journalists, soldiers and ordinary civilians, and their central role in spreading propaganda.  Meanwhile, WhatsApp’s inventor, a Ukrainian-born Jew whose creation made him one of the wealthiest people in the world, has kept conspicuously quiet throughout the conflict. Jan Koum, who controls a multi-billion-dollar charitable foundation, has not uttered a public word even as many other wealthy Ukrainians and Russians announce donations toward humanitarian relief efforts.  But based on an examination of tax returns filed by Koum’s foundation before the war, the publicity-shy WhatsApp founder, who arrived in California as a teenager, is more entwined than meets the eye with the events rocking the country he left behind as a 16-year-old. His donations, only a sliver of which have been previously reported, include tens of millions of dollars to Jewish organizations now involved in relief efforts in Eastern Europe.  For example, from 2019 to 2020, the latest year for which there is a tax return, the Koum Family Foundation donated about $17 million to the European Jewish Association, an organization headquartered in Brussels that launched a campaign in March to provide housing, food and clothing to refugees from the…

You can finally move your WhatsApp chats from Android to iOS | Digital Trends

Moving WhatsApp chats from Android to iOS has been a painful task for years. But not anymore, as Apple and WhatsApp have made the process a whole lot easier. Starting today, Apple is adding a feature that allows you to move chats between the two platforms. The feature is a part of Apple’s existing “Move to iOS” Android application. It’s worth noting that the feature is currently available for beta users only, so non-beta users might have to wait for a week or two as it’s rolled out in phases. This is a big move since 2 million people use WhatsApp and, until now, there wasn’t an official method to move conversations between Android and iOS. There have been third-party solutions here and there, but nothing officially backed by Apple or WhatsApp. With the feature becoming available, users will be able to move their chats swiftly from Android to iOS. Apple In addition to needing the Move to iOS app, there are a few other requirements users need to be aware of. Your iPhone must be running iOS 15.5 or later, and your Android phone needs Android 5.0 or above. You also need the latest version of the Move to…

This means the old and new phones must be on the same Wi-Fi network (a Wi-Fi hotspot works too) and both must be plugged into a charger. Apple's Move to iOS app Note that the data on the Android device won’t be wiped automatically, you can do that yourself afterwards. Maharashtra Cyber police uncover WhatsApp cloning racket while probing loan app cases

The Maharashtra Cyber Crime department, while investigating the ongoing cases involving loan apps, has discovered a new racket, where cybercriminals can install WhatsApp on their phones using mobile numbers registered with other people. The advantage is that when these WhatsApp accounts are used for criminal activity, the police land up at the wrong person's doorstep while the actual criminals continue their activities.Earlier this month, the Cyber police had started investigations against Happy Loans, a loan app registered in Gujarat, after a Mulund resident registered an FIR against its recovery agents. The victim was getting messages on WhatsApp, in which the recovery agents were threatening to tell all his contacts that he was a rapist. The police traced the number from which the messages were being received and, to their surprise, found that it was registered to a vegetable seller from Dhule.“We brought in Gawli for inquiries and he turned up with local political representatives in tow, who demanded to see what proof we had. We showed them the messages sent from his number and Gawli placed his cell phone on our desk. It was a basic model which did not even have WhatsApp,” an officer with the Maharashtra Cyber department said. The…

Facebook Messenger follows in WhatsApp's footsteps – Makes calling accessible for users

The tab for calls will now appear in all Facebook Messenger user's apps. As this feature is slowly rolling out to a few selected users, they can now spot this function on the lower section of the app's screen, situated between the People and Chats tab. It will eventually be available to all users since it is being updated in phases.According to Meta, the decision to integrate the feature for calls on the Facebook Messenger app's main screen was taken because of the substantial increase in video and audio calls conducted through another user's chat window. To call someone on the app, users had to create a new chat and then tap on the call button. The update has made making calls on Messenger more accessible and easier to use. There are 40 percent more regular users now than earlier in the year 2020. The reason behind this is the COVID-19 outbreak which drove many companies and employees to work remotely, where they used video and speech to conduct meetings and conferences. Every day, Messenger users across the globe make over 300 million voice and video calls, a number that continues to increase. As stated by Meta, Facebook's parent company, the new…
