WhatsApp may soon roll out a feature that would allow users to log into the messaging platform on their personal computers without being online through their smartphones. The feature is presently at the beta testing stage on selected Android and iOS devices. The opt-in feature has been made available in the settings menu of the app. Presently, in order to use WhatsApp Web, which is the personal computer version of the messaging service, users have to keep their phones online. With the potential roll-out of the latest feature, the linked personal computer would be able to receive and send messages for up to 14 days. This, if the user decides to not manually log out. From today (1 November) WhatsApp will no longer be supported on 53 models of phones. It will not work on Android phones running OS 4.0.4 and older, and for iPhones it requires iOS 10 or newer. Users of Android and Apple devices have been warned to upgrade their devices or update their software. If upgrading to a new device existing accounts will be re-enabled when entering the same phone number associated with it. Although it’s not possible to transfer chat history between platforms, for example from Android to iPhone, people can still keep their chat history. Mumbai: A special court here while granting bail to Aachit Kumar last week in the drugs-on-cruise case said merely on the basis of WhatsApp chats, it cannot be gathered that he had supplied drugs to co-accused Aryan Khan, the son of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, and Arbaaz Merchant. The court in its detailed order, a copy of which was made available on Sunday, also raised questions on the veracity of the Narcotics Control Bureau's (NCB) panchnama records said they were fabricated and seemed suspicious. Special Judge V V Patil, designated to hear cases related to the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, granted bail to 22-year-old Kumar on Saturday. The court in its detailed order observed that except for the WhatsApp chats with Aryan Khan, there is no evidence to show Kumar was indulging in such activities. “Merely on the basis of WhatsApp chats, it cannot be gathered that the applicant (Kumar) used to supply contraband to accused No 1 and 2 (Aryan Khan and Arbaaz Merchant), especially when the accused No 1, with whom there are WhatsApp chats, has been granted bail by the High Court,” the order said.
