WhatsApp banned 2 million Indian accounts during May 15-June 15 period

Photo for representation only. — File photo New Delhi, July 15 WhatsApp banned two million Indian accounts while it received 345 grievance reports between May 15 and June 15, the company said in its maiden monthly compliance report as mandated by the IT rules. The new IT rules require large digital platforms—with over five million users—to publish compliance reports every month, mentioning the details of complaints received and action taken. "Our top focus is preventing accounts from sending harmful or unwanted messages at scale. We maintain advanced capabilities to identify these accounts sending a high or abnormal rate of messages and banned two million accounts in India alone from May 15-June 15 attempting this kind of abuse," WhatsApp said on Thursday. WhatsApp clarified that more than 95 per cent of such bans are due to the unauthorised use of automated or bulk messaging (spam). "We expect to publish subsequent editions of the report 30-45 days after the reporting period to allow sufficient time for data collection and validation," WhatsApp said in the report. The Facebook-owned company explained that the number of accounts banned have risen significantly since 2019 as the sophistication of systems has increased, and "so we are catching…

WhatsApp has a new interface for calls!

WhatsApp is already getting a new interface for calls. Graphically speaking, this wouldn’t specifically be a revolution. However, this will improve usability, especially when we want to add new participants or join a conference call that has escaped us. WhatsApp has a new interface for calls! The WABetaInfo website has found a new interface for calls in WhatsApp Beta clearly installed on FaceTime. With the new interface, the buttons are more differentiated. Moreover, it is easier to know if they are active or not. Previously it was not well understood. Especially when the smartphone screen is not very bright. However, the call button has moved to the bottom and appears next to the volume, microphone, and video buttons. However, if we scroll from the bottom, the Add Participant button will appear. Also new in the latest beta is the ability to join group calls after they have started. For example, if someone invited you for a conference call and didn’t keep up with them, joining now will be easier. To do this, simply click on the banner that says Click to Join. In case you don’t remember when we missed a conference call, we had to ask the organizer to…

Will WhatsApp become a new sales channel?

According to Prodware, a leader in information technology consulting services, consumers are increasingly more curious, impatient, demanding, and require instant and personalized communication, which has led to the establishment of new commercial approaches to respond to emerging demands from the market. In this context, WhatsApp, the most used messaging application in the world with more than 2 billion users worldwide, is an important tool to consider for businesses. In fact, the company formalized its intentions to become the sales communication platform par excellence with the launch of WhatsApp Business in 2018. "WhatsApp allows you to open a sales channel that is already being used globally by customers, most people check their messages several times a day. It is also a less invasive option than a phone call and more personal than email,” stated Prodware. Thus, despite the fact that WhatsApp was not born as a marketing tool or as a sales channel, many companies are already making use of this alternative to sell their products and services, to have a direct communication channel with the client, and as a key tool to generate engagement. The application allows companies to connect with customers no matter where they are, thus establishing a…

WhatsApp View Once feature reaches iOS beta. How to check if feature is enabled

WhatsApp recently started rolling out the new View Once feature to iOS users running the application's beta version. The View Once feature allows the sender to send text messages as well as media which disappears after the recipient views it. iOS WhatsApp beta users are now receiving the feature, according to WABetainfo, a website that tracks the latest features on the instant messaging platform. iOS users using WhatsApp beta will receive a pop-up explaining the new feature. The pop-up is expected to show up before they send any media file on the instant messaging app. Reportedly, users will also see a blue-and-white '1' icon in the caption text box. The feature has already been rolled to WhatsApp beta testers on Android. A similar feature was first introduced by Snapchat and then later brought to Instagram as well. With WhatsApp, the feature will also function in a similar way. However, there are some problems with the feature being actually useful. Despite the View Once feature, there is big loophole where the media sent under this mode can still be saved by the recipient. WhatsApp does not have a screenshot detection feature and any person who views the media can even take…

WhatsApp for iOS working on a new call experience

WhatsApp had released version 2.21.140.11 beta on TestFlight. This update brings a new call interface and a few more tweaks to this function. According to WABetaInfo, when WhatsApp beta testers make a call using the app, they will see a new interface similar to FaceTime. It also adds a new Ring button as well, which easily lets someone in the call ring a person again if they were unable to accept it. Another feature introduced in this version of WhatsApp beta is the ability to join an ongoing group call if the user didn’t respond at the time the call was made. When can you join group calls? If you temporarily ignore to participate in a group call, and you open WhatsApp again after some time, if the group call is still ongoing, the app might present you an alert if you want to quickly join the call, without asking other participants to add you again.  With the “Tap to join” banner in the call tab, the user just needs to click there to participate in the conversation. Recently, WhatsApp also started to test multi-device compatibility on the desktop app. Also according to WABetaInfo, users will be able to add…

WhatsApp and the wait for Data Protection Bill

Harish Salve, WhatsApp’s counsel, has pressed the pause button on a legal brawl by telling the Delhi High Court that the messaging service provider will not enforce its new ‘privacy policy and terms of service’ until the Personal Data Protection (PDP) Bill, 2019, becomes law. WhatsApp can afford to wait. A Joint Committee of the Parliament that is examining the PDP Bill was given more time to do its work in March this year – till the first week of the monsoon session of 2021 of the Parliament. Since the monsoon session is scheduled to begin in July 19, the extended time is coming to an end very soon. Unless, yet another extension – the fifth – is given. Some experts have wondered whether the government is trying to cover up its own failure to pass such an important legislation as the PDP, which is more granular than the existing laws relating to personal data, by narrowly interpreting the existing laws to suit its convenience.
