S$2 million increase in money cheated through WhatsApp, Facebook & Instagram scams for 1st …

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) received at least 1,188 reports of social media impersonation scams in the first six months of 2020. This was a marked increase from the same period last year — where only 83 cases were reported — with the SPF warning they have observed the "re-emergence" of such scams. In addition, the total amount cheated also increased to S$2.8 million, from at least S$726,000 in the first half of 2019. According to a news release, such cons typically involved the scammers impersonating the victim's friends using compromised or spoofed WhatsApp, Facebook, or Instagram accounts. They would then trick the victim into disclosing their credit card information and one-time password (OTP). Recent Qoo10 impersonation scams More recently, the SPF said, victims have received fake Qoo10 campaign messages from their friends over WhatsApp, purporting that they had won a lucky draw. The messages then led victims to fake Qoo10 websites requesting their personal details like mobile numbers, internet banking details, and OTP. These were obtained under the pretext of being a requirement for the victims to claim their prize. However, victims later discovered that unauthorised fraudulent transactions had been made on their credit cards and bank accounts without…

WhatsApp OTP scam: Know everything about it

WhatsApp OTP scam: WhatsApp is one of the most famous messaging apps in the world, used by so many people, it is natural for hackers and scammers to target it. Most users make it easy for hackers to get on because they are not careful with the app. One of the easiest ways for scammers is to take over our WhatsApp accounts is through the OTP. What is OTP scam? Whenever you reset up WhatsApp or on a new smartphone, once you enter your registered phone number, WhatsApp sends an OTP to your registered number. You need to type this to configure WhatsApp. You need to take care of two things: you have to enter your phone number to receive OTP from WhatsApp and WhatsApp will never send an OTP unless prompted. Scammers are using this OTP feature to get in. They pretend to be friends or family and will contact you on any other messaging platform, via SMS or Facebook Messenger, and will tell you that they got disconnected from your WhatsApp accounts, and need your help to get in. Hackers go on to say that since they cannot access your accounts, they cannot receive OTP on your numbers.…

WhatsApp files occupying too much phone storage? Here's what you can do

Here is how you can clear unwanted files from your device and efficiently manage your storage.BusinessToday.In | November 21, 2020 | Updated 11:38 IST WhatsApp keeps on rolling out new features every now and then to keep its users updated. But one thing that has remained a problem for the majority of users is the portion of phone storage taken up by the files received via the messaging application. Given that WhatsApp is a widely popular messaging app used to share everything from photos to videos and even documents, the amount of data exchanged on a daily basis through the platform is substantial. Multimedia files like photos, videos and audios alone capture a lot of storage and occupy most space in your phone device. Not clearing these files tends to take a toll on your phone's storage, and in turn, its performance. Whenever the storage of your phone gets full, the device starts lagging. You may have also seen constant pop-ups like 'WhatsApp has stopped working' with the app crashing in the background. So, here is how you can clear unwanted files from your device and efficiently manage your storage. Use 'Manage storage' feature on WhatsAppMost common error that users make is that instead of deleting files from the WhatsApp folder, they delete it from their camera roll only. Which is why most of us don't fully get rid of unwanted files from our device. When you delete pictures from your device, that doesn't necessarily mean that the pictures you sent or received via WhatsApp are gone as well. So it is always advisable to delete pictures from WhatsApp itself. In order to get rid of those files from your app, follow these simple steps. Navigate to settings (found in the menu represented by three dots in the top right…

WhatsApp will stop working on Windows 10 web browser, are YOU affected?

WHATSAPP has confirmed plans to stop supporting Microsoft Edge on Windows 10. But don't worry too much. Please see our Privacy Notice for details of your data protection rights.WhatsApp has ditched support for Microsoft Edge. But don’t worry, this isn’t the same Microsoft Edge that now ranks as the second most popular web browser on the planet and comes preinstalled with every version of Windows 10. No, no – this is the original Microsoft Edge.Microsoft debuted its shiny new Edge web browser alongside Windows 10 back in summer 2015. It was designed to replace the ageing Internet Explorer and boasted a number of new technologies and features. However, it proved to be pretty slow and websites didn’t optimise their content for the new software, so it quickly became a punchline. Earlier this year, Microsoft relaunched the browser – with the same name, confusing I know – built on the same Chromium codebase used by Google Chrome.Sharing the same underlying code as the browser used by almost two-thirds of all desktop users worldwide means thousands of browser extensions and virtually every website is optimised and compatible with the new version of Microsoft Edge. Coupled with some clever new tweaks and optimisations (that mean it’s much less of a battery life and processor drain on macOS than Chrome), Edge has surged into second place – gaining thousands and thousands of users in less than 12 months since its launch. With the original, hugely unsuccessful Microsoft Edge now banished to the history…
