Ife OgunfuwaWhatsApp, chatbots and telephone banking rank low among banking platforms used by Nigerians, according to the Augusto & Co Consumer Digital Banking Satisfaction Index report.However, the report, which examined customers’ preferences towards digital banking platforms hosted by 10 selected banks in Nigeria found that mobile banking applications remained the most popular digital banking platform.It stated that the increasing use of mobile banking was also supported by the growing base of mobile phone users.The study found that Internet and USSD banking ranked second and third among the most preferred digital banking platforms among Nigerians.“Mobile banking applications remain the most popular digital banking platform. The increasing use of mobile banking has also been backed by the growing base of mobile phone users, which has grown by a five-year compound annual growth rate of six per cent to 184.4 million as the end of 2019,” the Augusto & Co Consumer report stated.It added, “Approximately 82 per cent of the survey respondents are aware of their respective bank’s mobile banking service while Internet banking recorded a 57 per cent awareness.“While the level of USSD banking awareness of 48 per cent was comparably lower than the aforementioned services, it increased from 45 per cent in the 2019 survey.”Analysts at Agusto & Co stated that because USSD banking uses analogue technology and did not require an Internet connection, it extended banking services to a wider audience, especially low-income earners.This, according to them, has helped the prominence of USSD banking.The study revealed that funds transfer, airtime and data top-up, bills payment and account balance were the most common transactions carried out on digital banking platforms.According to Augusto & Co, approximately 46 per cent of the survey respondents are aware of the existence of digital/neo banks.The report said, “However, given that it’s a new trend in the…

The approval comes two and a half years after WhatsApp launched in beta mode, but was then forced to comply with India’s data localisation requirements. The NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) has granted approval to Facebook-owned WhatsApp to launch payment services in India. “Starting today, people across India will be able to send money through WhatsApp,” Facebook said in a statement on Thursday (5 November). “This secure payments experience makes transferring money just as easy as sending a message.” In 2018, WhatsApp’s payment services launched as a beta in India, but its full rollout was delayed for two and a half years due to concerns about data storage and sharing. WhatsApp has since made changes to its data infrastructure to meet RBI (Reserve Bank of India) requirements for all data to be held locally. The WhatsApp payments feature has been developed in partnership with the NPCI, using its real-time payment system known as the UPI (Unified Payment Interface). The feature is available in 10 Indian languages. Customers are required to have a bank account and debit card in India to send funds using WhatsApp’s payment service, which sends instructions to banks that initiate the transfer of money between sender and receiver bank accounts via UPI. WhatsApp is currently working with ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, the State Bank of India, and Jio Payments Bank to enable the payment service. UPI is supported by more than 160 banks. The NPCI said WhatsApp is allowed to expand its UPI user base in a “graded manner”, starting with a maximum registered user base of 20 million customers. Facebook Inc.’s WhatsApp has introduced a setting that automatically deletes messages after seven days, a move aimed at encouraging users to feel comfortable chatting in confidence. Europe’s telecoms industry on Thursday slammed proposed tweaks to planned EU rules governing Facebook’s WhatsApp and Microsoft unit Skype that would tighten the rules faced by telecoms providers to use electronic communications metadata. The planned EU rules subject WhatsApp and Skype to the same rules as telecoms providers, Reuters reported. The bloc’s 27 countries have struggled to find common ground on the ePrivacy regulation drafted by the European Commission in 2017 because of disagreement on rules for cookies tracking users’ online activities crucial for targeted advertising, and consent requirements. Germany, which currently holds the rotating EU presidency, shared its proposed tweaks with other EU countries on Wednesday evening. The document reduces the legal grounds for telecoms providers to use electronic communications metadata for other purposes or to further process the data, in a blow to the telecoms industry looking to use network location data for smart transport services as a potential money-spinner. Lobbying group ETNO, whose members include Deutsche Telekom, Orange and Telefonica, and mobile operators group GSMA were scathing about the German proposal. “Germany’s proposed text fails to bridge the gap between protecting privacy and confidentiality and stimulating innovation in European service providers,” they said in a joint statement. They urged other EU countries not to back the proposal unless it allows them more freedom to use metadata for legitimate purposes and for further compatible processing. The bloc will have to agree on a common stand before thrashing out details of the rules with the Commission and European Parliament.
