WhatsApp’s privacy policy and the myth of user choice – The Federal

On February 3, the Supreme Court posed a question many users have wondered: When WhatsApp says you have a "choice" about sharing data, but the alternative is losing the app entirely — is that really a choice? This sits at the heart of a five-year legal battle over the messaging app's 2021 privacy policy that has now reached India's highest court, with implications for how democracies regulate digital monopolies. In January 2021, WhatsApp updated its privacy policy, requiring Indian users to accept expanded data-sharing with Meta companies — Facebook and Instagram — or stop using the app. Unlike a 2016 policy that allowed users to opt out, the 2021 version eliminated the choice. Users faced what the Competition Commission of India (CCI) called a 'take-it-or-leave-it' ultimatum: accept or leave. Critically, as the CCI found, even though WhatsApp later announced users wouldn't lose functionality for refusing the update, this "announcement did not withdraw the new terms of service and privacy policy". The 2021 policy remains effective, and crucially, "grants WhatsApp

WhatsApp Users Urged to Change One Setting Immediately – Ground News

Published 1 day ago • loading... • Updated 4 hours ago WhatsApp patched a vulnerability allowing automatic download of malicious files via fake group invites and recommends updating app and adjusting privacy settings to reduce risk. WhatsApp recently urged users to update to the latest version of WhatsApp and adjust settings to reduce exposure after releasing a security patch. Google's Project Zero team found the flaw stems from WhatsApp's automatic download feature, exploited by cyber criminals who create fraudulent group conversations to save media without user interaction. To disable auto-download, launch WhatsApp and go to the Settings menu → Storage and data → Media auto-download to deselect Photos, Audio, Videos, and Documents, then adjust Groups privacy to exclude untrusted numbers. With billions of WhatsApp users, accepting a malicious invite could allow hackers to download corrupt files unnoticed, posing a significant security risk. The app added: `Strict Account Settings is one of many ways we’re working to protect you from the most sophisticated of cyber threats`, WhatsApp said, emphasizing privacy tools and Rust behind the scenes. Do not spam my WhatsApp DM with advice! Havi says on joining DCP – The Star

Former Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi has hit back at critics questioning his decision to join DCP, urging them to stop sending unsolicited messages. In a statement shared on Twitter, Havi said, “Please, do not spam my WhatsApp dm with advice or dissatisfaction with my choice to join DCP.” He questioned the timing of the criticism, asking, “Where have you been for the last 4 months since I resigned from UDA, to advise on what I should have done or not done?” Havi challenged those offering unsolicited opinions to test their own mandate at the ballot, saying, “Weka picha yako na jina lako kwa ballot if you think you are more knowledgeable on the matter.” The remarks underline the tensions that often follow party realignments and highlight Havi’s insistence that his decision to join DCP is final, while calling on critics to focus on their own political paths. On Wednesday, February 4, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), welcomed Havi into the party, describing him as a prominent legal expert whose experience could contribute to the party’s legislative work. Gachagua said the DCP values “great legal minds for legislation, representation and

The policy was to facilitate increased data sharing for business purposes, which led to the CCI slapping a Rs 214 crore fine on the company. LocalCircles polled 13,362 users, out of which 96% reported receiving promotional or spam WhatsApp messages every day. More than half of the respondents (54%) reported receiving one to three promotional or spam messages daily, while 30% reported receiving eight to seven messages of this sort, and 11% reported that they received eight or more messages day-after -day.
